Canada scores big at the Oscars
After making the short list of nine film titles, Canada’s Monsieur Lazhar was officially nominated for the Academy Award.
Announced earlier this morning, this was just one of six nominations for Canada.
Historic year at the Oscars
This is the first time ever that a Canadian production company has been nominated for the Foreign Language Oscar in two consecutive years. Luc Déry and Kim McCraw of micro_scope also produced last year’s searing drama Incendies.
What’s more, this is the first time that Canada has been nominated in the category two years in a row in the history of Canada at the Oscars.
The nomination culminates a successful year for the film team, racking up nominations and awards in festivals around the world. Most recently, at home, Monsieur Lazhar was also nominated for nine Genie awards.
The Canadian minority coproduction (Poland) In Darkness was also recognized in the Foreign Language Category.
Oscar also showed his love for Canadian veterans Christopher Plummer, nominated for his Golden Globe-winning performance in Beginners, and composer Howard Shore, for his original score in Martin Scorsese’s Hugo.
Two short films produced by the National Film Board have also received Oscar nods: Dimanche from Patrick Doyon and Wild Life from co-directors Amanda Forbis and Wendy Tilby.
The awards will be handed out in Hollywood on February 26.
