Telefilm Canada supports the production of six English-language feature-film projects for a total investment of $6.4 million

Montreal, September 25, 2012 – Telefilm Canada is supporting the production of six English-language feature films through the Canada Feature Film Fund (CFFF). For the first quarter of 2012-2013, a total of $6.4 million in funding was committed to these projects from the Atlantic and Ontario-Nunavut regions. Telefilm announces decisions on a quarterly basis as there are no applications dates for English-language feature-film projects.

Atlantic Region

All the Wrong Reasons

All the Wrong Reasons stars Cory Monteith, Karine Vanasse, Kevin Zegers and Emily Hampshire (winner of the inaugural Birks Canadian Diamond award presented during Telefilm Canada’s first Tribute to Canadian Talent at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival). The film is about choices made in the aftermath of severe traumatic stress. The story hinges on two lives that intersect in a big box department store: a woman who has witnessed her sister’s suicide and a firefighter who was hurt on the job. She endeavors to keep her comfort zone intact while he strives to regain his former life.

When 14-year-old Michael’s parents are killed in a car crash, he and his younger brother are split up and Michael is sent away to live in a city far from his beloved out-port home.  He tries to adjust to his new life in spite of trouble at school and the dictates of his authoritarian Uncle Ted.  When Uncle Ted’s fist comes down hard once too often Michael decides to run away, and his timid cousin Curtis, longing for freedom, begs to join him. As the boys head on in the wilderness, their journey proves more revealing and more dangerous than either could have imagined.

The film is directed by the Canadian actor, director and producer Jason Priestley. A 61-year-old dying man’s plan to check out on his own terms takes a reluctant detour when he inadvertently winds up on the lam with an “anything-but-normal” 22-year-old girl.

Gabriel and Marika are happily married, and have a 9-year-old son, Erol. They’ve found the rarest of things in each other - true love, and a happy family life - until Gabriel mysteriously disappears without a trace. Twelve years pass and the mystery surrounding Gabriel’s disappearance still haunts Marika and Erol. Misfortune once again strikes when Marika takes her own life. On the heels of this tragedy, Erol discovers a way to undo the past, and sets out to uncover the true nature of Gabriel’s disappearance, a journey that leads to one of the greatest discoveries in history - one that could bring Erol’s family back together, but at the expense of everything he’s come to cherish.

Uvanga

Uvanga means ‘myself’ in Inuktitut. Uvanga is the story of a 13-year-old boy looking for himself in a world that gave him life, but it is a world that he does not know. The boy and his mother make a two-week visit north so that he can connect with his deceased father’s family. Their emotions will follow unexpected trajectories, paralleled by the disorienting High Arctic summer and its twenty-four hours of sunlight.

The romantic comedy, starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Zoe Kazan, Rafe Spall and Megan Park, tells the story of a young man who must put to test the idea that boys and girls can be “just friends” when he falls for a girl at a party who already has a boyfriend.
