Telefilm Canada welcomes Michel Roy, new Chair of the Board
Montreal, October 15, 2007 – Telefilm Canada warmly welcomes the news of Michel Roy’s appointment as chair of the Corporation’s Board. The announcement was made on October 12 by The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of Canadian Heritage. Michel Roy takes over from Felix (Fil) Fraser, who has served as interim chair of Telefilm since February 2007.
“Michel Roy’s experience in public administration and his interest in the arts, television, music, and writing will make him an invaluable asset to Telefilm and the Canadian industry,” said Wayne Clarkson, Executive Director of Telefilm. “Our team welcomes him with great enthusiasm.”
Mr. Roy has a master’s degree in public administration from the Université du Québec. He worked in television production in the 1960s and created more than 60 programs for Radio-Canada.
Mr, Roy then entered Quebec's public service, where he held the positions of deputy minister of Tourism (1989 to 1991), deputy minister of Communications (1991 to 1994) and delegate of the Quebec government in Chicago (1994 to 1996). As deputy minister of Communications, he led many teams and advised the minister on the management of Télé-Québec, the Régie des télécommunications (telecommunications board) and the Commission d’accès à l’information (access to information commission). Recently, he produced two jazz albums. He now focuses on writing.
Michel Roy is also the father of Hall of Fame Montreal Canadiens goaltender Patrick Roy.
Executive Director Wayne Clarkson thanked Fil Fraser for his dedicated efforts as the Corporation’s interim chair: “In his capacity as a member of the Telefilm Board for the past four years and interim chair for the past eight months, Fil Fraser has contributed to achieving the Corporation’s mandate with outstanding enthusiasm, commitment and ethical action. I am pleased to know that he will continue to serve the best interests of the Canadian industry as a member of the Board.”
Developing and promoting the Canadian audiovisual industry
Telefilm Canada is a federal agency dedicated to the development and promotion of the Canadian audiovisual industry. Telefilm provides financial support to the private sector to create distinctively Canadian productions that appeal to domestic and international audiences. The Corporation also administers the funding programs of the Canadian Television Fund.
