Telefilm Canada launches renewed Theatrical Documentary Pilot Program

Montreal, October 4, 2007 – Telefilm Canada is delighted to announce the official launch and call for applications to the renewed Theatrical Documentary Pilot Program for the production and post-production of feature-length documentaries intended for Canadian theatrical release. The one-year renewal of this pilot program, for a total of $1.875 million, is a direct response to discussions with the Canada Feature Film Fund industry Working Groups and addresses the needs of each language market.

Telefilm’s total financial commitment of $1 million is allocated two-thirds for the English-language market and one-third for the French-language market: $500,000 for the production of English projects and $275,000 for French projects. For post-production, Telefilm is investing $165,000 for English-language projects and $60,000 for French-language projects.

The Rogers Group of Funds is committing a total of $375,000, specifically $250,000 for the production of English-language projects and $125,000 for French-language projects.

In addition, the National Film Board is injecting a total of $500,000, specifically $335,000 for English-language projects and $165,000 for French-language projects at the production stage, for producers who wish to co-produce with the NFB.

“It is an exciting day for our organizations,” said Wayne Clarkson, Executive Director, Telefilm Canada. “The partners’ distinct but complementary mandates have created a unique situation whereby eligible producers have increased access to financial resources, more flexibility and greater autonomy. Most significantly, there is the added advantage of drawing from the financial savvy of Telefilm Canada, the market expertise of Rogers and the co-production experience of the NFB.”

Robin Mirsky, Executive Director of The Roger Group of Funds, added: “Rogers is thrilled to be involved in this project again this year. Our commitment further demonstrates our belief in the power of the documentary genre for Canadian audiences and audiences abroad. This partnership will create a significant opportunity, both practically and financially, for successful applicants to access the theatrical marketplace.”

Tom Perlmutter, Government Film Commissioner and NFB Chairperson, further added: “As Canada’s public producer and distributor and a long-time champion of theatrical documentaries, the National Film Board of Canada has led the way in every major advancement in documentary cinema, amassing an unparalleled track record in innovation and excellence that we are proud to bring to the Theatrical Documentary Pilot Program. At today’s NFB, we’re committed to working with independent filmmakers and partners across the country to develop more great Canadian documentaries – works that will explore vital issues, make a difference in people’s lives and help to redefine the direction of 21st century cinema.”

Eligibility criteria, guidelines and application forms for the Theatrical Documentary Pilot Program are now available on Telefilm Canada's Website. Applications to the Pilot Program are now being accepted in regional offices across the country. Deadline for applications is November 5, 2007.
