Telefilm Canada launches Écrire au long, a call for projects for the development
of regional French-language fiction feature films
Montreal, December 21, 2006 - Telefilm Canada's French Operations and Quebec Office is launching Écrire au long, a call for projects to creators working outside Montreal or outside Quebec for pre-development and development of French-language fiction feature films. The deadline to submit project applications is January 24, 2007.
"This initiative is the result of ongoing dialogue with the Table régionale de l'Association des producteurs de films et de télévision du Québec (APFTQ), the Alliance des producteurs francophones du Canada (APFC), and the Quebec City Film and TV Commission," stated Michel Pradier, Director, French Operations and Quebec Office at Telefilm. "Its purpose is to offer regional creators a market-driven program that encourages creation in French outside Montreal."
"In point of fact, Écrire au long marks the first step in a new support strategy for regional production," continued Pradier. "One of the key agents of our cinema's success is its ability to draw on a diversity of creative sources. We are confident that, by seeking out creators from Francophone regions in Quebec and across the country, we will be able to contribute to fostering the creation of even more French-language stories that are waiting to be told."
The project selection committee is composed of a distributor, an experienced producer, a script advisor and a Telefilm representative.
This initiative has three components:
- A three-day writing workshop at the Institut national de l'image et du son (INIS) in Montreal, to be held on February 21, 22 and 23, 2007. A maximum of 10 projects (five from outside Quebec and five from outside Montreal) will be selected at this stage;
- An eight-week rewriting period, during which each writer will receive a repayable advance of $2,000 and, in certain cases, script consulting advice from an INIS script advisor; and
- Development support in the amount of $20,000 will be granted to a maximum of four projects (two from outside Quebec and two from outside Montreal) that had obtained pre-development support (writing workshop and rewriting period).
Telefilm will support projects with production budgets of between $300,000 and $1 million. Deferrals may be added to this cap. The project must score at least 8 out of 10 points on the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office (CAVCO) Canadian content scale. Projects with co-production potential are eligible.
Selection criteria
Projects will be assessed on the basis of their originality and creativity, and their potential for theatrical distribution.
Submission deadline
Projects must be delivered by 5 p.m. EST on January 24, 2007 to Telefilm's Montreal office.
