Telefilm Canada launches breakthrough Canada-UK TV coproduction event
Montreal, January 16, 2006 - Telefilm Canada is pleased to announce that
it is holding, in association with UK regional screen agency North West Vision,
a ground-breaking Canada-UK Television Coproduction Immersion to develop the coproduction
skills of producers and generate genuine working relationships.
The event, taking place near Manchester, England from March 5 to 7, 2006 is
a tailor-made program, designed and delivered by UK consultancy firm Olsberg|SPI,
which will provide producers from all parts of Canada and the UK with a complete
immersion in the television coproduction landscape.
"There has been increasing opportunity for producers from both countries
to meet, but this is really a can't-miss chance for them to understand each
other's challenges," said Danny Chalifour, Telefilm's Director of International
Operations and Development. "Canadian participants will learn how they
can work with the UK television market, and British producers will get to know
a key partner to help them take advantage of the new UK rights environment."
Immersions, such as this initiative, are integral to Telefilm's objective to
building the long-term viability of the Canadian industry by fostering international
partnerships.
Alice Morrison, Chief Executive of North West Vision, added: "This innovative
event is a completely new kind of television coproduction based on role-plays
and challenges. Developing and strengthening international links is a vital
way in which we can ensure Manchester is recognised as one of the most vibrant
TV bases outside of London. That is why we are proud to be part of the Canada-UK
Television Coproduction Immersion, and to support this event through our Regional
Attraction Fund (RAF)."
The approach
Participants will be made up of a select group of 24 experienced TV producers
- 12 from Canada and 12 from the UK - from three key genres where there is meaningful
coproduction activity: drama, documentary and children's programming.
In addition, Advisors, composed of high-level practising industry professionals
from Canada and the UK, will provide a key leadership role in the Immersion.
The focus will be on demystifying the mechanisms and clarifying the mechanics
of coproduction largely through interactive, participatory teamwork and individual
challenges during which key practical issues of coproduction will be covered.
The application process
Successful applicants will have a track record of program-making for their local
market, and will be able to demonstrate preparedness for coproduction activity.
Producers who wish to participate must apply through a competitive selection
process, in order to ensure regional representation across the two countries,
and to make certain that participants are ready to take part in coproduction
arrangements.
Application forms are available here
and at www.o-spi.com. Canadian producers
should return it to mcdonae@telefilm.ca
by January 27, 2006, 5:00 EST, and UK producers should return it to
info@o-spi.com by January 27, 2006, 5:00 PM GMT.
