Water surpasses $1 million at the English-language domestic box office
Montreal - December 2, 2005 - Telefilm Canada is delighted to congratulate
Deepa Mehta's critically acclaimed feature film Water, for having surpassed
the $1 million mark at the domestic box-office since its theatrical release on
11 screens across the country on November 4, 2005.
"Water's success can be attributed to the talent that Deepa has
always exhibited," stated Wayne Clarkson, Executive Director, Telefilm.
"Moreover, the film's universal appeal, the acting, the story, coupled
with the steadfast commitment of both the production team and distributor Mongrel
Media, are all part of the equation here. Canadian audiences will go see Canadian
films that reflect Canada's unique and diverse voices."
Visually hypnotic, Water is set in a House of Widows in Benares, India
in 1930, and follows the tale of 7-year-old Chuyia, a child bride, whose "husband"
has just died. The arrival of this inquisitive and innocent child shatters the
soul-destroying isolation that the other widows have accepted. Chuyia's own
tragedy propels rebellion against the tyranny of this outmoded and controversial
way of life, and propels the women towards a form of freedom.
Water, the third film in Deepa's trilogy had its world premiere at the
opening of the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2005, where
it was enthusiastically received by movie goers and critics alike, and generated
unprecedented word of mouth attention.
Telefilm Canada has partnered with the director/producer team, Deepa Mehta
and David Hamilton, in the past, having participated in the crowd-pleasing Bollywood/Hollywood
(2002). In the case of Water, Telefilm has been on board since the film's
early stages of development in 1999.
Wayne Clarkson added: "Telefilm, together with its stakeholders and clients,
is committed to continue building awareness and audiences for home-grown films.
We are thrilled with Water's success and are extremely encouraged by
the positive reviews, audience numbers, and by Mongrel Media's excellent work
in bringing this film to Canadian audiences."
