C.R.A.Z.Y. is Canada's pick for the Oscars® in 2006
Montreal, September 20, 2005 - Telefilm Canada, Chair of the Canadian
selection committee for the 78th Annual Academy Awards®, is proud to announce
that Jean-Marc Vallée's C.R.A.Z.Y. has been submitted to represent the
country in the bid for a nomination in the Best Foreign-Language Film category.
C.R.A.Z.Y. is a Cirrus Communications and Crazy Films production made
possible by executive producers Jacques Blain and Richard Speer, and producer
Pierre Even. The film is distributed in Canada by TVA Films, in the United States
and France by MC International, and internationally by Films Distribution.
Starring Michel Côté, Danielle Proulx and Marc-André Grondin,
C.R.A.Z.Y. has been a hit at the box office taking in $5.4 million to
date, and recently winning the Toronto City Award for Best Canadian Feature
at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was described by festival
organizers as a "wildly entertaining film (that) is an ambitious and magical
cinematic homage to the pop-culture-saturated middle class of the seventies."
Eligible films for Best Foreign-Language Film
Ninety-one countries have been invited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences to submit their top films for consideration. According to Academy
rules, an eligible film must have had its first public showing in a commercial
motion picture theatre in its home country for at least seven consecutive days
between October 1, 2004 and September 30, 2005. In addition, the film must have
been produced with a non-English or predominantly non-English dialogue track
in an official language of the submitting country.
In 2004, 50 countries submitted films for consideration.
The 78th Academy Award® nominations will be announced at the Academy's
Samuel Goldwyn Theatre on January 31, 2006.
The Canadian Committee
Chaired by Telefilm Canada, the pan-Canadian selection committee is comprised
of 25 voting Canadian film delegates representing major industry associations
and government agencies.
This year, C.R.A.Z.Y. was selected, by majority vote, from a total of
12 eligible films submitted by producers.
Only one picture is accepted from each country. The Academy then votes for
the five films that will eventually receive official nominations. Films submitted
for Best Foreign-Language Film Award consideration may also qualify for other
categories, provided they meet the requirements of the special rules governing
those categories.
Over the course of the history of the Academy Awards®, Canada has made
the shortlist for Best Foreign-Language Film three times: Denys Arcand's Le
Déclin de l'empire américain (The Decline of the American Empire)
in 1986, Jésus de Montréal (Jesus of Montreal) in 1989
and, the country's first-ever winner, Les Invasions barbares (The Barbarian
Invasions) in 2004.
