Statement from Telefilm Canada regarding the overlapping of dates between the Atlantic Film Festival and the Festival International de Films de Montréal

Montreal, April 12, 2005 – Telefilm Canada regrets the current date overlap situation between and the Atlantic Film Festival (AFF) and the Festival International de Films de Montréal (FIFM). Telefilm supports both festivals as legitimate events that will play key roles in showcasing Canadian films and filmmaking talent.

We are doing our utmost – in collaboration with these two industry players – to identify all potential impacts and minimize any possible ramifications for the Atlantic Film Festival.

We recognize that this is not an ideal situation for the AFF since September and October are extremely busy months in the Canadian festival season. However, this is a transition year as the following editions of the FIFM will take place in the summer. We are confident that the Atlantic Film Festival will successfully reach its audience.

Already, the Atlantic Film Festival and the Festival International de Films de Montréal have been in discussions to work out a mutually beneficial solution. To date, both film events have agreed to work closely to ensure smooth print movement between the two festivals, and alleviate press and guest issues.

It is Telefilm’s wish that both festivals have fair access to Canadian films.

Telefilm has been a long-time partner with the Atlantic Film Festival and its innovative Strategic Partners Coproduction Conference. We are very proud of the Festival’s 25-year history, and what it has accomplished in Halifax and the region. And we endorse its five-year strategic plan to become a full-fledged international event.
