36 Scripts Accepted to the Screenwriting Assistance Program

Montréal, July 23, 2004 – Telefilm Canada’s Screenwriting Assistance Program (SAP), announced their commitment to 22 English-language and 14 French-language creative, original script treatments and first drafts.

Launched in 2000 as a program of the Canada Feature Film Fund, SAP is dedicated to developing and retaining a pool of creative, talented and experienced screenwriters, as well as a bank of Canadian feature film screenplays that have high box-office potential. The successful applicants were chosen by a jury of their peers, comprised of professional screenwriters, feature film producers, distribution executives and directors.

“The Screenwriting Assistance Program is intended to tap into existing outstanding Canadian screenwriting talent and these projects exemplify this objective,” noted Ralph Holt, Telefilm Canada’s English Operations National Sector Head for Feature Film. “Since its inception SAP has supported many scripts like Judgment at Medicine Hat, by Christopher Frewer and Frederick Kennedy, which has been optioned. These are the kinds of successes we are working to achieve and build upon with every national investment decision we make.”

SAP encourages greater opportunities for creative renewal and professional development, while seeking to ensure that Canada’s cultural diversity is reflected in film.

“We are pleased that the Screenwriting Assistance Program has met with success and that several French-language projects such as Les Trois petits cochons, by Pierre Lamothe, have been optioned by producers,” said Michel Pradier, Telefilm Canada’s Director of French Operations and Quebec office. “It is through such initiatives as le Grand Flirt, which helps to forge links between screenwriters and producers, and its companion, le Match Parfait, which provides both screenwriters and producers the opportunity to present their projects to distributors, that we can help bring the screenplays that were retained by the program to the big screen.”

In an effort to respect the confidentiality of the decision making process, since projects accepted to the “Outline to Treatment” stage may be resubmitted for funding at stage 2, “Treatment to First Draft,” only the names of the screenwriters are published at Stage 1.
