Telefilm Canada’s Screenwriting Assistance Program
Backs Promising Screenwriters
Montreal, December 15, 2003 – Telefilm Canada is proud to announce its decisions for the September 22, 2003 submission date to the Screenwriting Assistance Program (SAP). Established in 2000, as a complementary component of the Canada Feature Film Fund, this program is dedicated to developing and retaining a pool of creative, talented and experienced screenwriters, as well as a bank of Canadian feature film screenplays that have high box-office potential. The successful applicants were chosen by a jury of their peers, comprised of professional screenwriters, feature film producers, distribution executives and directors.
“We are so pleased with the quality of the projects selected,” said Richard Stursberg, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada. “This program’s objective – to tap into existing, exceptional Canadian screenwriting talent – is consistently met with each round of applications. Canada has a wealth of original and audience-friendly stories just waiting to be discovered.”
The Screenwriting Assistance Program, a national initiative, will finance
16 outline to treatment and 8 treatment to first draft English-language projects, as well as 7 outline to treatment and 8 treatment to first draft French-language projects, representing a financial commitment of approximately $600,000 to the development of these accepted projects.
In an effort to respect the confidentiality of the decision-making process, since projects accepted to the “Outline to Treatment” stage may be resubmitted for funding at stage 2, “Treatment to First Draft,” only the names of screenwriters are published for Stage 1.
