Canada Feature Film Fund — fiscal 2002-2003
Third application deadline — Quebec office
Telefilm Canada backs two promising projects
Montréal, November 6, 2002 – Telefilm Canada is pleased to announce the two French-language projects chosen in the third round of the selective component of the Canada Feature Film Fund (CFFF).
The Quebec office gave its support to Littoral, by playwright/director Wajdi Mouawad, and Elles étaient cinq, written by Chantal Cadieux and directed by Ghyslaine Côté. Mouawad’s film, a Canadian-majority coproduction with France (70%-30%) produced by Les Productions E.G.M. Ltée and distributed by TVA International Distribution inc., is a dreamlike telling of the story of a young man who discovers both his father and his identity on a journey back to his homeland. In Côté’s film, produced by Forum Films Inc. and Remstar Productions inc. and distributed by Remstar Distribution inc., four women in their thirties meet up again, after losing touch for several years, on the scene of their friend’s sordid murder.
“We received a great number of applications for the last part of this fiscal year,” said Richard Stursberg, Executive Director of Telefilm Canada. “The quality of the projects made the choice extremely difficult. However, the two films d’auteur selected met Telefilm Canada’s objectives for the promotion and development of the Canadian film industry.”
“The projects submitted cover a very wide range, in terms of both subject and cultural content. We had committed ourselves to giving the producers an answer by November 15 and we are pleased to be ahead of that schedule. It was important to allow the producers to begin production as soon as possible,” added Louise Deslauriers, Director of the Feature Film Unit for Quebec.
The Canada Feature Film Fund is made up of two components, one selective and the other performance-based. The selective component takes into account creative criteria, audience potential, financial aspects and the applicants’ corporate development. The performance-based component provides annual envelopes to companies with a good track record at the box office.
The deadlines for French-language projects in the CFFF’s selective component for fiscal 2003-2004 will be announced at a later date.
