Atlantic Emerging Filmmakers’ Program
Four short films to be financed
Halifax, August 23, 2002– Telefilm Canada, Atlantic region is pleased to announce four new recipients of the Emerging Filmmakers’ Program (EFP): Jason Buxton for The Drawing, Beverly Lewis for Drive, Brian Heighton for Quilts and Marcia Connolly for Stella’s Room. These films were selected by a four-member jury from seven film proposals, to receive $15,000 each towards the financing of their project.
Ralph Holt, Director of Operations for the Atlantic Region, stresses the importance of support for filmmakers in the early stages of their careers. "The purpose of the EFP is to create opportunity for Atlantic filmmakers in the development of medium length programs. This program also affords Telefilm the opportunity to work with emerging filmmakers and to invest in the region's future longer-form drama.”
This year's jury was made up of industry professionals from the Atlantic Provinces, including Ken Pittman (Red Ochre) of Newfoundland, Deborah Carver an independent producer from Nova Scotia, Sean Coyle (Virtual Media) of Cape Breton and Renée Blanchar a film director from New Brunswick.
The Emerging Filmmaker's Program, announced in April 1999, is exclusive to the Atlantic region. Its objective is to provide an opportunity for up and coming filmmakers from all four Atlantic provinces and from all cultural and linguistic groups to produce a film from 30 to 75 minutes long. The next application round for the Emerging Filmmakers Program will be in the Spring of 2003.
