Four short films receive financing through Telefilm Canada's Atlantic Emerging Filmmaker's Program

Halifax September 4, 2001- Telefilm Canada, Atlantic region is pleased to announce four new recipients of the Emerging Filmmaker's Program: Justin Sims for Ashore (Newfoundland), Shandi Mitchell for Baba's House (Nova Scotia), Jonathan Collicott for Pale Blue Glass (New Brunswick) and Jay Dahl for The Wedding Video (Nova Scotia). These films were selected by a four-member jury from seven film proposals to receive $15,000 each towards the financing of their project, all between 24 and 60 minutes in length.

"There are a number of opportunities in Atlantic Canada to produce short films under 30 minutes. We see more obstacles to the filmmakers development in the medium length 30-60 minutes," said Ralph Holt, Director of Operations for Telefilm Canada, Atlantic Region. "In most cases, emerging filmmakers begin their career with short films and Telefilm's vision for the Emerging Filmmaker's Program is to invest in the region's future longer-form drama producers.

This year's jury was made up of industry professionals from the four Atlantic Provinces, including Gretha Rose (Cellar Door Production) of Prince Edward Island, Jennice Ripley (Film East Inc.) of Newfoundland, Chuck Clark an independent film producer from Nova Scotia and Toni Merzetti, Administrative Coordinator for the New Brunswick Filmmaker's Co-op.

The Emerging Filmmaker's Program is an initiative of Telefilm Canada's Atlantic Region office that started in 1999. The deadline for the next round of the Emerging Filmmakers Program will be in the Spring of 2002.

In addition to the Emerging Filmmaker's Program, Telefilm Canada also gives out a $5000 prize to the Best Atlantic Short Film during the awards ceremony at the Atlantic Film Festival.
