ANDY JONES: KING O'FUN

This one-man show is a combination of Andy Jones' attempt to recreate “the funniest moment in Western Civilization” (as suggested to him by some German tourists), and an attempt by the people of the Whisgiggan Dimension to transport Andy to their world before his eating habits cause him to die an early death. The show features Andy’s runaway- freight-train approach to the great ideas of philosophy and literature through comedy and tragedy.

COMICOGRAPHIES II

Female humour and hidden-camera humour are the flavours of the week in these two new episodes in the series Comicographies. The narration is hilarious; only the archival documents are authentic and these are put together for the essentials only. With careful shooting and editing, we reinvent the history of the themes examined: something on the TV that never happened, far-out sketches and false evidence from actors and comedians.

ET DIEU CRÉA... LAFLAQUE II

Gérard D. Laflaque, the celebrated 3-D character created by cartoonist Serge Chapleau, returns to the small screen. As celebrity host of a weekly newsmagazine show on Radio-Canada television, Gérard – with the help of his co-hosts – casts his penetrating and caustic eyes on all aspects of current affairs: politics, the economy, social trends, culture, etc. Et Dieu créa... FRIC SHOW

In the whirlwind of modern consumption, do we really know what we’re buying, who’s selling and who’s making a profit? Fric Show in its own eccentric style, offers the necessary information for decoding the discourse on conspicuous consumption and its relationship to high-pressure marketing and globalization. Its goal: to show consumers that they have more power than they realize. With all the humour that viewers expect from host Marc Labrèche, Fric Show shines a light that’s both critical and surreal on our society.

LÉVESQUE-TURCOTTE « SOUS OBSERVATION »

Inspired as ever, this Quebec duo of comedians, Dany Turcotte et Dominique Lévesque, deliver the jokes fast and furious in the vein of the celebrated Groupe Sanguin, the visually sophisticated comedy troupe the duo belonged to in the beginning of their careers and that had a profound effect on Quebec humour in the 1980s. Turcotte and Lévesque’s satire, mocking but not derisive, is fed by an audience that has known the duo’s emblematic characters for a very long time.

MARC DUPRÉ... DE MARC DUPRÉ

This extraordinary variety show captures gifted impersonator Marc Dupré in performance. Sometimes outrageous, often critical, moving and humble, Marc Dupré has the ability to touch his audiences, to bowl them over, make them sing, clap their hands – and make time fly by without anyone's noticing. This hip, up-to-the-minute show features a set with giant screens as a backdrop and a back-up band of highly talented musicians with whom Dupré does a little give and take – to the audience's delight. There are moments of subtle tenderness mixed with laughter and self-mockery. A winning formula, no doubt about it.

MOI, MA MÈRE... II

Moi, ma mère... is a collection of musical performances and interviews that pay tribute to the mothers of Quebec. Performers, singers, comedians, writers, athletes, politicians and journalists recall an important moment in their relationship with their mother. While some remember the more tender moments in these relationships, others remember the more joyful moments. Among the highlights are Éric Lapointe singing You Are So Beautiful to his mother, and Garou's performance of Serge Reggiani's L’absence, which the singer dedicates to all mothers who have lost a child. Moi, ma mère... is sure to give you goose bumps!

ROXANA

Roxana is the first film adaptation of Daniel Defoe’s extraordinary novel to combine choreography, music, drama and stylized decor to realize the life of a modern-day courtesan. The film takes the 18th century setting of the novel and thrusts it into the conservative period of the 1950s, exploring the complex relationships between ambition, sexuality and desire.

TALE OF THE MAGIC FLUTE (THE)

This is a provocative new dance presentation adapted by Barbara Willis Sweete from Mark Godden’s original work for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Mozart’s opera has been transposed to a mythological setting including fabulist elements as far-fetched as 18th century Masonic symbols and artefacts of 1960s hippie-chic. The sublime movement is in sharp contrast with the many moments of ribald and outright shocking humour scattered throughout what is, in the end, a gorgeous love story.

YOURS, AL

Yours, Al celebrates the life of Al Purdy, arguably English Canada’s greatest poet. Actor Gordon Pinsent brilliantly captures the essence of the man, pausing at his high and low moments in a metaphorical, abandoned house where he portrays Purdy writing and reading the funny, moving or insightful poems that are rooted in the rock and dirt of eastern Ontario, and everywhere else in Canada.
