CANTATA FOR THE KING

Cantata for the King is a weird and wonderfully entertaining performance special - a post-modern musical celebrating the music and genius of Elvis - the King of rock'n'roll. It is a film of homage, wit, irreverent fun, and sheer sonic power. The core strength of Cantata for the King is the avant-garde musical invention of John Korsrud's Hard Rubber Orchestra and the performance talents of special guest soloists.

ÉLÉGIE

A truly original work for television, Elegy is a daring marriage of non-dialogue dance and drama. Despite its principal theme of death and self-destruction, Elegy is a life-affirming work in which chance encounters and insignificant incidents serve to brighten the final moments of a woman's life. Displaying her customary strength and sensitivity, Karen Kain offers a particularly moving performance.

PINES OF EMILY CARR (THE)

The Pines of Emily Carr is Canadian composer Jean Coulthard's musical setting of texts drawn from the writings of artist Emily Carr. It takes the form of a cantata for narrator, voice, string quartet, piano, and tympani. The writings evoke Carr's solitary life of painting in the West Coast pine forests. Implicit in them is her quest for self-realization, self-fulfillment and a desire to convey her spiritual yearnings and perceptions in graphic form.

QUEST

Quest is an eloquent union of storytelling, traditional music, First Nation mythology and modern dance interpreting the stories of Mother Earth and the rite of passage of the soul. This original Aboriginal dance piece was created and written by Byron Chief-Moon, using the stories his grandparents from the Blood Reserve once told him as a child about the "Sleeping People." Quest examines how modern life has led to the loss of rituals, a lack of respect for nature and spiritual emptiness.
