RAVEL'S BRAIN

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s greatest composers. For the last five years of his life, however, he was afflicted by aphasia and apraxia: his brain produced music, but he was unable to write it down. Ravel’s Brain is a musical/visual tone poem at once tragic and celebrative in its mood. Expressionistic and abstract, it portrays the inner being of an artist who was rendered incapable of communicating with the outside world.

More Than a Thousand Kisses

More Than a Thousand Kisses serves Bach’s music in a contemporary cup. The Coffee Cantata pitches a grumpy old father against his cunning daughter Liesgen in a fight over the three daily cups of coffee she loves “more than a thousand kisses.” Shot entirely in Vancouver, the film cuts through layers of time and reality and steams up a baroque brew of anachronism, reflection and aesthetic delight with a subtle, surrealist twist.

Plus beau voyage (Le)

Like a hushed, eternal echo, Le plus beau voyage revisits some of Quebec’s greatest songs, from the moment of their creation 30 years ago to today. Written by such songwriters as Leclerc, Vigneault, Léveillée and Gauthier, these still-relevant songs are performed by artists from different generations. This program offers a unique look at contemporary Quebec through the great songs that have become an indelible part of its identity.

Sola

Sola is based on a trilogy of solo contemporary dance works – Birth, ABO/ashes and Sadhana – danced and choreographed by Alvin Erasga Tolentino. These provocative and critically acclaimed dances follow the journey of transformation through various states of being and levels of consciousness: the birth of a seed, the pervasive decay of existence and finally the path to enlightenment. Woven between the dances is a voice-over of the creator’s vision and thoughts, accompanied by footage on the making of the program.

Homme de verre (L') (Collection Musique de Chambre VI)

Set to a musical soundtrack featuring the Serenade for Strings, one of his best-known works, this program takes us into the life of the great 19th- century Russian composer Pyotr Illich Tchaikovsky. Behind the scenes at an Italian theatre, actors and dancers perform an evocative representation of the composer’s private life, illustrating his repressed homosexuality, his relationship with his wife Antonina, his ambiguous association with Baroness von Meck, his patron, and his persecution complex, which ultimately hastened his death.
