100 Québécois qui ont fait le XXe siècle

100 Québécois qui ont fait le XXe siècle looks at the lives of major figures who helped shape Quebec society during the last century. What did these important men and women achieve, and how and why did they do so? In answering these questions, the series also explores the role of the “hero” throughout history: Is not a hero someone who serves as an instrument of collective will, channeling a force much stronger than him- or herself?

1701 la Grande Paix de Montréal

In 1701, Montréal was the site of the Great Peace, a pact between the French and some 40 Native nations. Although the treaty helped foster development in the New World, it also entailed the strategic withdrawal of the Native nations, a policy aimed at ensuring their survival. How do things stand today, some 300 years later? This documentary examines the contemporary repercussions of the historic treaty through the eyes of Native people.

Journal d'un fou

“If this isn’t Hell, it’s the next best thing to being there….” Filmmaker Mark Blandford talks about the debilitating depression that he suffered several years ago. He looks at mental illness from within and from without, and examines a number of issues: the sense of despair; the taboo which surrounds mental illness, making it seem as if it were something shameful; the importance of family and loved ones; treatment and cure, which restore happiness and inner peace.

Art d'être parent II (L')

Becoming a parent is about creating new life and watching that life evolve into something unique. It’s about forging a new relationship into which you pour all your desires, ambitions, beliefs, intuitions and emotions. Being a parent also involves learning how to avoid laying down your brush before the work is finished – finding the courage to keep working until your “art” no longer needs your attention, until your child is ready, in turn, to undertake his own act of creation.

Canadians: Biographies of a Nation (West) (The)

Four distinguished but little-known Canadians are profiled in this series of biographies. Artist Robert Markle emerged as an exceptional painting teacher in the 1960s; Marion de Chastelain shuttled vital enemy secrets during World War II; Fred Rose was a labour activist and MP who battled anti-semitism in the 1940s; Czech-born actor and filmmaker Vladimir Valenta survived six political regimes – and one Oscar-winning film. All four profiles provide intimate glimpses into noteworthy but often unheralded lives.

Ceux qui attendent

After centuries of peaceful coexistence, the Acadians and the Mi’kmaq of New Brunswick found themselves, in the fall of 2000, on opposite sides of a fierce conflict over their respective share of lobster stocks. The name of the community, Burnt Church, became an international byword for Native rights. This documentary looks at both sides of the dispute, providing insight into the men and women who have lived through the events and helping us to understand what separates as well as unites the two communities.

Chiefs II

Chiefs relates the saga of the great leaders, warriors and diplomats of the First Nations whose stories form a central drama of Canada and the North American continent. A blend of documentary and dramatic re-enactment, Chiefs brings to life the power, spirit and mystery of the First Nations. The series also seeks to separate the myth from the men, to tell the story of leaders who could be at once Machiavellian, magnanimous, brilliant and brave.

For many others, biker culture evokes fear because of its association with drugs, organized crime and violence. What is the truth? Who are today’s “bikers”? Chrome and Thunder is a unique and unsentimental video odyssey into the biker world.

Circus II

This series follows the Garden Bros. Circus during its 2001 tour, capturing all the drama and excitement of life onstage – and backstage. The performers work and live together and, in many cases, their lives depend on each other. The work they do is difficult and, above all, dangerous. Circus provides real insight into this chaotic, usually hidden world — with eye-catching, often breathtaking vignettes, rich in character and full of thrills, humour, frustration, daring and emotion.

Crossing Bridges

Mozart’s 41st symphony, The Jupiter, provides the musical backbone for this provocative documentary chronicling a Middle East concert tour by Israeli-born maestro Pinchas Zukerman and Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra. Originally slated to include stops in Jordan and the Palestinian town of Ramallah, the tour was shortened due to the latest outbreak of Middle East violence. Crossing Bridges is a moving testament to the dedication of the various artists involved and the bridges that remain to be crossed in the ongoing quest for peace.

De Huron à Wendat

In 1980, Denis Boivin, a young filmmaker, shot a documentary – which was never released – about the Huron Village near Québec City. Boivin returns to meet the proud Huron, who now call themselves the Wendat. What has become of these Native people’s quest for individual and collective identity? De Huron à Wendat explores the complex notion of belonging, as well as the unique form of democracy of the Wendat, who have been profoundly marked by the loss of their traditional language and the effects of mixed marriage.

This series explores and dissects the phenomenon of comedy in Quebec. Each installment looks at a particular aspect of the comedy industry: radio comedy; burlesque; comedy for women, young people and night owls; comedy of the absurd; comedy which provokes; and, finally, laughter in all its manifestations. Debout les comiques proves that Quebec comedy is unique in terms of its vitality, range and scope.

Ebola War - The Nurses of Gulu

Ebola War - The Nurses of Gulu tells the story of Ugandan nurses who volunteered to combat Uganda’s first Ebola outbreak in October 2000. An international team of medical professionals, including Canadian doctor Bonnie Henry, was also sent to Uganda to help contain the outbreak. Complicating the situation was Uganda’s 15-year-old war with northern-based rebels. Despite the deaths of their colleagues, discrimination and inadequate medical supplies, the nurses persevered, saving hundreds, if not thousands, of lives.

Entre père et fils

Entre père et fils explores the father-son relationship. Researchers have recently begun studying the role played by fathers in shaping the fundamental character of their sons. In addition, the very concept of masculinity is being redefined, causing men to re-examine, not only what it means to be a man, but to be a father as well. Increasingly, men are paying more attention to the concept of fatherhood. This documentary explores all aspects of this fascinating topic.

Esprit des lieux (L')

There are places that are wild and unspoiled; there are places that have been altered by man; there are sacred places, and profane places; there are animal sanctuaries and animal markets. L’esprit des lieux looks at the spaces we have been given: how we “interpret” them, how we live in them, how we imagine them and, of course, how we have changed them. An exploration of Canadian spaces.

Firedance

Firedance is about the fusion of two dance forms – Kathak of India and flamenco of Spain. We are dazzled by the performances of Toronto dancers Joanna Das and Esmeralda Enrique, by their footwork and the rhythms of tabla and guitar. Probing into the historical roots of the dances, the film reveals that flamenco sprang from the classical form of Kathak, brought into Europe by the gypsies of India.

Firestorm: The Fire Suspension Paradox

Fifty years of “all-out-war” against forest fires has had a profound effect. With the advent of technology, firefighters have gained the upper hand in a battle to control nature. But there’s a catch. By suppressing wildfires that would have cleared the underbrush, we have created a powder keg of unburned fuel. A powder keg ready to explode… in firestorms that no amount of human effort and technology can control.

Fougues gaspésiennes

The filmmakers involved in this documentary d’auteur hail from the Gaspé region of Quebec – either by birth or by choice – and all have paid tribute to or promoted the region in their art, music or public service. Although a celebration of the Gaspé, Fougues gaspésiennes is a concept that can appeal to all Canadians, as every region of Canada has its own committed and devoted artists, fiercely proud of their native soil.

Friday the 13th: The Devil in Dover

Friday the 13th: The Devil in Dover is a documentary about how a motorcycle rally pushed a small Ontario town into the headlines and changed it forever. Told from the perspectives of a local cop, an outlaw biker and an opportunistic business woman, the film provides a gently comic portrait of the conflicts dividing the town, played out against the backdrop of civic disorder, police operations and thousands of bikers who invade Port Dover every year.

Juggling Dreams

Juggling Dreams travels to Ulan Bator, the capital of fabled Mongolia where, today, thousands of kids as young as 10 years old have been forced onto the streets, living in manholes and surviving through theft and prostitution. Enter Marc Laporte, of Save the Children, and Cecile Truffault, a busker and juggler with Canada’s Cirque du Soleil. Together, they set up an outdoor circus camp on the edge of the Gobi Desert – rescuing the kids and offering them an education as well as circus training.

Water Marks

In 1975, the naked and beaten body of poet Pat Lowther was discovered floating in Furry Creek, near Vancouver. Her husband Roy was convicted of the murder, and later died while serving his sentence. Pat left behind two daughters, Beth and Christine, who are now writers themselves. They are seeking to learn as much as they can about the mother they lost so young. This journey back is also a journey forward, to a place where a dark past no longer holds them captive.

Lakes

Surrounded on three fronts by ocean and webbed with fresh water, much of Canada’s history has been defined by our waterways. Canada boasts more than two million lakes, which bless us with more fresh water than any other country in the world. If rivers were the ancient highways, then the lakes were the destination, the feeding grounds of all living things. This series tells the stories of the first people, explorers and settlements associated with Canada’s great lakes.

Life & Times: The Lewis Family

The Lewises are a remarkable Canadian political family whose philosophical roots go back four generations, beginning with Maishe Lewis, who fled Russia for Canada in 1921, unable to speak English and nearly penniless. Maishe’s son, David Lewis, was a major force behind the establishment of Canada’s first socialist political party. Together with his son, Stephen, now a UN ambassador, David pressured governments to pass social welfare legislation. The latest member of the family to make a name for himself is Stephen’s son Avi Lewis, a noted broadcaster/journalist.

Loi de l'eau (La)

Quebec has one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the world. This documentary examines how pollution caused by excessive industrial activity is threatening Quebec’s groundwater supplies, primarily through the use of pesticides and other highly toxic – and unregulated – substances. La Loi de l’eau argues that a new water policy be implemented immediately – one which recognizes that great care must be taken in managing this extremely valuable and limited resource.

Microbes Rule the World

Life on Earth is absolutely and totally dominated by microbes: not only do they live in places we didn’t think were livable, they have shaped our planet – and life on it – in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Not only did they colonize Earth hundreds of millions of years earlier than we had thought, they have colonized every form of life too. Microbes Rule the World explores this new frontier: from rocks in the Antarctic, to hot vents on the ocean floor, to the surface of Mars.

The documentary unravels a contemporary Cinderella story, with its dreams of glamour and promises of a fairytale ending.

It is the quintessential question posed at every New Year’s party: “What is your New Year’s resolution?” We’ve all made them and we’ve all broken them. The individuals diagnosed with A.D.D. – one from each family – span the ages of seven to adulthood and come from different socio-economic backgrounds. An intensely personal story, Odd Kid Out is given added poignancy by the fact that the filmmaker and her 12 year-old-son, who was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, take part as one of the subject families.

Offspring

Recently, Barry Stevens found out that he may have as many as 100 to 200 half brothers and sisters. Stevens and his mystery siblings were among the first artificially conceived humans – the offspring of an anonymous sperm donor who lived in England half a century ago. Now, Stevens is searching for the identity of the shadowy figure from whose loins they all sprang. His film – essentially a detective story set in the brave new world of reproductive technology – also questions the meaning of family and blood ties.

Peanuts

Jock Brandis, visiting a village in Mali, noticed that villagers were growing a lot of cotton. Knowing that cotton, which depletes the soil of nitrogen, could turn their village into desert, Jock encouraged them to grow more peanuts. “But sun-dried peanuts are hard to husk,” they said. “If you grow them, I’ll come back with a machine,” said Jock. Peanuts is the story of Jock’s invention and his return to Mali.

If Mother Nature could start over with the human body, given Earth’s current environment and the needs to which our bodies have had to adapt, what would we look like? Should we have knees that don’t give out at 35, and a lower back that lasts longer? Should we walk on all fours instead of upright? Perfect Man, Perfect Woman explores an entertaining notion: What if we could create the ideal human body, tailor-made for the modern world to run better and last longer?

Punk X

Punk X is a follow-up to the 1983 documentary Not Dead Yet, which chronicled a year in the life of the Toronto punk-rock scene. As this documentary shows, many of the characters from Not Dead Yet never abandoned their core values. They continue to challenge the system, question authority, and fight the good fight. Yes, they want a better life, but not at any cost. Proud or pathetic, they are still punks, part of a nebulous and much-maligned subculture that was once, mistakenly, written off as a passing fad.

Que reste-t-il ?

Death is troubling, frightening, fascinating. Because it awaits us all, and because no one can ever know what it is, death has always been shrouded in mystery. What happens to our bodies after we die? And what does our body symbolize for those we leave behind? Que reste-t-il ? attempts to answer these questions from a variety of perspectives: medicine, science, the funeral industry, psychology and the arts.

Radio Revolution: The Rise and Fall of the Big 8

In the 1960s, there was only one radio station: CKLW, “The Big 8.” The most powerful force in the American music business, Windsor’s CKLW dominated the airwaves and turned on the world to Motown, soul and rock and roll. Radio Revolution investigates the international social, political and musical impact of CKLW during the turbulent sixties and seventies. In the days before MTV, the electronic street corner was radio – and CKLW was the hippest and loudest street corner in the world.

RBO : The Documentaire

For 10 years, the comedy troupe Rock et Belles Oreilles skewered contemporary society on their weekly television show. Drawing on the show’s archives, this five-part series looks at the political, social and cultural issues that marked late-20th-century Quebec. Each installment focuses on a single theme: society, politics and history, television, advertising, popular song, and, finally, the people behind RBO. Experts discuss the major issues the troupe covered in its skits.

This documentary chronicles daily life at Roger Toupin’s neighborhood grocery store, which has become more of a drop-in centre for local residents than a business. Shot over an extended period of time, the film offers a moving and perceptive look at the end of an era – one in which corner grocery stores played a key role in neighborhood life. Today, local grocery stores such as Roger’s are quickly disappearing.

Science of Death (The)

The Science of Death looks at what happens to bodies after death has been pronounced. Scientists who work with cadavers, cadaveric tissue and skeletal remains have shown that biological activity persists in remains for hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of years after a person’s “lights have gone out.” The “signs of life” that neurologists, anthropologists and others have discovered within cadavers challenge our current definition of death.

Simon and the Spirit Bear

Simon Jackson was only seven years old, a bear-obsessed kid in West Vancouver, when he first began fundraising to save bear habitats. A lemonade stand was the first step towards building the Spirit Bear Youth Coalition – an international lobby group that brought British Columbia lumber companies to their knees and forced the B.C. government to protect one of the world’s rarest bears, the magnificent all-white “Kermode” that roams the wild, wet Pacific Northwest coast of British Columbia.

Spirit Creations features traditional and contemporary Aboriginal designers, and introduces us to a range of art forms, including birch bark biting, basket making and clothing design. It looks at the history, spiritual significance and importance of preserving these art forms as part of a rich cultural heritage. Streetnurse

This point-of-view documentary explores the mean streets of Toronto through the eyes of Cathy Crowe, a woman who calls herself a “streetnurse” because her patients live there. A nurse, activist, rebel and artist, Cathy started the Disaster Relief Committee, the group that first declared Canada’s housing crisis to be a national disaster. Streetnurse is the very personal story of a woman who has made fighting homelessness her life’s mission, an activist who lives and breathes the adage, “one person can make a difference.”

Terezin

Terezin was a “model” concentration camp which the Nazis wanted to show off to the world. Through the eyes of Ela Stein Weissberger, a camp survivor – and the participation of maestro Charles Dutoit, principal conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra – this documentary allows us to witness a dark chapter in modern history, one overshadowed by hatred but also marked by fleeting moments of tenderness. The film includes excerpts from the opera Brundibár by Hans Kráza, performed by an all-child ensemble – just as it was at Terezin during the Second World War.

Un jeu d'enfant

Gambling has become as much of a threat to the health of young people as cigarettes, drugs and alcohol – if not more so. However, parents, teachers and others seem totally unaware of the dangers posed by gambling, a problem which, experts say, has reached epidemic proportions. This film is a warning against the dangers of gambling, which is a sinister manifestation of our increasingly materialistic culture.

Our Grieving Hearts: Stories of Parental Bereavement

Three couples describe the ordeal of losing a child and their search for meaning in the face of this tragedy. It is a search that begins with tears and denial but often ends in a heightened sense of the sacredness and fragility of life. “Nothing gave me more joy than the births of my children,“says bereaved mother Margaret Trudeau. “And nothing prepared me for the extraordinary, outrageous pain of losing one of my children.”

Undying Love

Undying Love tells the poignant, enduring and miraculous love stories of the survivors of World War II. Against the brutalized landscape of post-war Europe, this film focuses on how survivors struggled to reconstruct personal identities and forge intimate relationships. Using searing testimonies, poetic dramatizations, archives and images of romantic love from the pre- and post-Holocaust era, Undying Love is a textured retelling of several extraordinary love stories which emerged “out of the ashes.”

The film is an attempt to understand the origins and consequences of the impulse to jettison families and everything comfortable for the unknown perils – and pleasures – of a new life.

Vietnam - The Untold Story

Vietnam: The Untold Story tells of the thirty to forty thousand Canadians who served in the United States military during the Vietnam War. The program fills in a missing piece of our national psyche. It is the story of a forgotten army of Canadians – all but a fraction of them volunteers – who served in a thankless war and came home to an indifferent and often hostile country.

Visions From The Wilderness: The Art of Paul Kane

This documentary profiles the fascinating and paradoxical life of North American landscape and portrait artist Paul Kane. In the mid-1800s, Kane travelled a continent to document a changing Native world. Back in Toronto, however, he succumbed to the tastes of his audience when presenting his final work. A mix of art, history, and exploration, Visions From the Wilderness: The Art of Paul Kane examines conflicting opinions about the historic and artistic value of Kane’s work.

Voyelles enchantées (Les)

Young people often abuse alcohol and tobacco because they are unable to communicate and make their feelings known. Inspired by an original idea by singer-songwriter Albert Belzile, Les Voyelles enchantées aims to help young people find their voices. The vowels in certain words – “a” in alcohol and “e” in excess, for example – are used to encourage reflection on substance abuse. They also serve as a starting point for the writing of songs to dance or draw by.

When Two Won't Do

When Two Won’t Do is a funny, revealing documentary that seeks answers to life’s big relationship questions. Montréal filmmakers Maureen Marovitch and David Finch are the subjects on camera and the directors behind the lens. They are also a romantic twosome, with each holding totally opposing views on relationships. Maureen wants an “open” relationship and David insists on monogamy. Rather than break up, Maureen and David decide to depart from Montréal and undertake a filmic quest.

The Whistleblower puts a human face on the struggle to impose accountability on governments, corporations and others whose decisions affect society’s well-being. It follows several Canadians who have chosen to sound the alarm, and examines the reasons for, and personal repercussions of, their actions. WOW II

Thirty-three years ago, during Quebec’s Quiet Revolution, filmmaker Claude Jutra shot a documentary about a group of teens, titled WOW. Jean-Philippe Duval has made his own version of Jutra’s documentary, taking as his subject teens of the same age group. Love, sexuality, drugs, family, friendship, politics, society, the future: the film looks at a variety of issues and asks how today’s teens differ from those in 1968. WOW II is both a playful and a realistic look at a certain kind of teenager…
