24 heures pour l'histoire III

This documentary series recalls three days that marked Quebec’s modern history: the election of the Parti Québécois in 1976, the first Canadian heart transplant, and the death of Cabinet minister Pierre Laporte. Drawing on the testimonies of men and women who lived at the centre of these events, this series infuses history with real life and true emotion.

IL NE LEUR MANQUE QUE LA PAROLE

This documentary explores the way certain remarkable people, including the great Jane Goodall, interact with animals. Combining intuition and original experiments, these individuals shed new and fascinating light on the animals we thought we knew so well. Their new approach to animal communication raises important questions about our origins, how we relate to the animal world and what it is that makes us human.

Bad Girl

In New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Montréal, women are claiming the right to hard-core pornography, made by women for women. They are rejecting the censorship called for by feminists in the 1970s. Who are these women? Are they business-people who simply want a share of a very lucrative market? Avant-garde feminists? Advocates of a new approach to sexuality? Whatever the case may be, these women are revolutionizing a business which up to now has been controlled by men.

Biographie : Jean-Paul Nolet

“We, the Abenaki people, speak little. This is perhaps due to the fact that, for centuries, we were silenced. Or perhaps because we prefer to think rather than speak. I don’t know.” This quotation by Jean-Paul Nolet, a well-known radio and television host in Quebec, is an eloquent example of the man’s depth. Yet the quotation reveals a paradox: this proud Quebec Native, known for his warm smile, spent many years on television, informing us of the latest events around the world….

Biographie : Raymond Charette

In the late 1950s, a Quebec radio announcer began to make a name for himself, quickly becoming a model for his younger colleagues. His name was Raymond Charette. Determined and hardworking, Charette was a gifted reader – as was expected of all announcers at the time. However, Charette – along with Wilfrid Lemoine – was the first announcer in Quebec to broaden his skills and become a broadcast journalist, working in both radio and television. As this biography shows, Raymond Charette was a true pioneer in his field.

Captured Rain

As water becomes more valuable than oil, “captured rain” will generate wealth or lead to war. Population growth has overtapped rivers and lakes; aquifers are being drained faster than nature can refill them. The climate is getting warmer. Now add the complication of Free Trade – water as a “commercial good.” This two-part documentary sheds new light on the most vital environmental, economic and social issue of the new century.

Caught in the Speed Trap

A self-employed mother gets advice from a time-management consultant on how to find more time for her children. A businessman is admitted to a psychiatric centre after working too many 100-hour weeks. In Japan, a 23-year-old girl dies of karoshi — death from overwork! This is humanity on a treadmill, people running to catch up with everyday demands, then slowing down just long enough to ask themselves, “What am I doing and why am I doing it?” This documentary looks at our priorities: how we make them, how we live with them. And how we don’t.

Cecil's Journey

This documentary tells the story of Cecil Fernando, a 26-year-old second-generationTamil-Canadian painter who travels back to Sri Lanka for the first time since the civil war had forced his family to flee 21 years earlier. It is also the personal story of a son trying to speak to his father and confront the demons of the past and present. Finally, it is a story about the eternal search for love in all its various incarnations: love for one’s country, for one’s family, for one’s self, as well as romantic love.

Child's Century of War (A)

A Child’s Century of War is a journey through the bloodiest century in history – from the perspective of children. Recent wars have claimed the lives of more than two million children and severely injured three times that number. In their own words, in their own voices, in their stories, children take us through the events that have shaped us all. Through their telling of it, these events are reduced to immediate, pint-sized personal triumphs and tragedies. En masse, their story is epic.

Coq de Montréal (Le)

Serge, known as “le Coq de Montréal,” spent 12 years in jail for various crimes. He now wants to lead a more “normal” life. But how can he accomplish this without losing his “integrity”? The answer: by playing himself in an American crime drama. That’s how it goes today: it’s far less risky – and more lucrative – to act in a gangster flick than it is to rob a bank.

Daniel Johnson, député de Bagot

Former Quebec premier Daniel Johnson was the first political leader to bring credibility to the notion of Quebec independence. His vision of Canada was based on the principle of equality among its two founding peoples. Nicknamed “Danny Boy” by cartoonist Normand Hudon, Johnson was an ambitious and sincere man who managed to rise above his negative depiction by editorialists and opinion-makers in the media.

Danser par cœur

For more than 20 years, three folklorists have been collecting traditional songs and dances native to Quebec’s Outaouais region. They recently released a book and videocassette on their work. Their aim was not to produce an academic work of ethnographic research, but a guide to keep alive these unique dances of the Gatineau Valley. This documentary chronicles the folklorists’ initiatives by giving us an insight into their passion for traditional culture and follows them as they meet with local elders.

Disasters of Century II

Over the years, disasters have rocked the world, stealing innocence and destroying lives. Some of these disasters are easily remembered, others are forgotten, but all should be reflected upon. This series looks not only at the devastating toll of natural and man-made disasters, but also at the far-reaching implications of each tragedy on our own social history – at how something that happened long ago affects the way we live today.

Dying to Get In

Millions of people – the estimates vary between 25 and 80 million – roam the Earth looking for work and a permanent home. With the UN naming Canada as the best place to live in the world, it’s not surprising that one of their favourite destinations is Canada. However, as public attitudes harden, Canada is slamming the door. But that is not stopping the desperate: more and more, migrants are literally dying to get in.

Fiancée de la vie (La)

According to a Malaysian proverb, death is life’s fiancé; life and death are inseparable, bound together by a kind of promise. However, we live in a society which separates the living from the dead, which continually tries to push back, if not eliminate, the realm of death. This documentary, which features children speaking about death, breaks the silence on a topic that adults fear.

God's Explorers

God’s Explorers is a compelling history of Catholic zeal and mission among the Native peoples of northern Canada. Set against the North’s rugged beauty and dramatized by rare archival footage, God’s Explorers illuminates a controversial past that has left the Roman Catholic Church in agony. This is a story about how the missionary priests – the Oblates of Mary Immaculate – changed the North just as it changed them.

Chiefs

Chiefs relates the saga of the great leaders, warriors and diplomats of the First Nations whose stories form a central drama of Canada and the North American continent. A blend of documentary and dramatic re-enactments, Chiefs brings to life the power, spirit and mystery of the First Nations. The series also seeks to separate the myth from the men, to tell the story of leaders who could be equally Machiavellian, magnanimous, brilliant and brave.

Hair, There and Everywhere

Hair, There and Everywhere journeys through the underbelly of our culture’s obsession with body-hair removal. It asks, “Is our antipathy a media-induced fad, or something with historic roots that are more than skin deep?” Through interviews with practitioners/estheticians, shave slaves, biologists, philosophers and trend-setters, the film penetrates to the root of the removal revolution, journeying behind closed doors to examine our cultural signposts and probe the influences of fashion, pornography and big business.

Innu men and women live in harmony with their land and their values, although they are often forced to confront the difficult reality of their existence. This documentary captures a fleeting moment in the life of a community, caught between its own view of the world and the worldview that white society seeks to impose. Is Love Enough?

Until recently, the intellectually disabled were segregated from society, living in institutions and routinely sterilized. It was assumed that any of their offspring would be equally handicapped. However, the intellectually disabled can have “normal” children – and many have a desire to do so. This intimate portrait of the day-to-day lives of intellectually handicapped families underscores the essential dilemma: how to balance the basic human desire and right to parenthood with what’s in the best interest of the children.

Many of Quebec’s approximately one million lakes are “sick,” the victims of water pollution from a variety of sources: pleasure boats, agricultural effluvia, acid rain and logging. Lakes that are in close proximity to urban areas are more likely to suffer premature old age. This documentary ponders some of the crucial issues surrounding the future of Quebec’s lakes.

Jeux de société IV

All societies are made up of smaller “micro-societies,” and Quebec is no exception. Each program in this series focuses on a specific group, telling its story, introducing its members and contrasting the group’s similarities and differences with others. By learning about these diverse groups, we emerge with a better understanding of the wider social web of which they are a part.

Kink

Kink is a disclosure of one of the last taboos, the world of “kinky” sexual practices. Kink explores a variety of hedonistic lifestyles by following the individuals who choose to live their lives on a sexual edge, from their private S&M dungeons to their public play parties, from the leather store to the grocery store. Kink tells the subjects’ stories, in their words.

Lauzon Lauzone

This biography offers an up-close-and-personal look at the late Quebec filmmaker Jean-Claude Lauzon, and fea-tures excerpts from his work as well as the testimony of those who knew him at different times of his life. Lauzon emerges as an intense and extremely clear-sighted man, a fearless and troubled artist who made his mark on Canadian cinema. Behind the façade of arrogance – largely media-created – lay a vulnerable man who fought a constant battle against his fear of succumbing to depression or madness.

Life and Times of Veronica Tennant (The): Renaissance Woman

Passion and determination made Veronica Tennant a world-renowned prima ballerina. She danced alongside superstars like Nureyev and Baryshnikov. Ballet was her first dream, but many things stood in her way: she was shy and awkward, herdance teachers thought her body was wrong for ballet, she had serious injuries and was told she could no longer dance. Her triumph is a victory of discipline and desire over circumstance. Renaissance Woman is a visual feast.

Made in China

Made in China tells the poignant stories of adopted children from China, predominantly girls, who live with white families and face the challenge of making sense of their identity and their roots at a very young age. They talk about race, racism, birth parents and whether they will return to China to search for their roots. These amazing children reveal the joys and pain of living in visibly adoptive Canadian families.

Mandrake: A Magical Life

Leon Mandrake was a master of reinvention in a world of wonders. This biography resurrects and replays the great Canadian magician who mesmerized North American audiences from the 1930s to the 1980s. From his beginnings in tawdry nightclubs to the grand stage shows of vaudeville, impresario Mandrake read minds, performed large-scale illusions and sleights of hand. When times changed, so did he, making the transition from the big stage to the small box with his numerous television appearances.

Marymount Again

The year was 1977. René Lévesque was in power in Quebec; Les Canadiens were a dynasty for the last time. Elvis Presley passed away. It was in this era of transition that a group of students at Marymount High in Montréal left their friends and their school behind on a new journey: life. Now, 22 years later, the students return, along with photographer and first time filmmaker Paul Perrier, to document the different roads some of these people have travelled.

Men of Valour: Heroes of the Victoria Cross

One in 10. That is the estimate of a soldier’s chance of surviving an act of bravery that would be worthy of consideration for the Victoria Cross. Since 1856, only 1,354 individuals have met the criteria, and only 94 Canadians have received the honour. This documentary tells the stories of six Canadians who were awarded the Victoria Cross – including one surviving recipient. Personal reminiscences, photos, news footage, newspaper clippings and full-scale battle re-enactments are used to tell their incredible stories of valour.

They’ll see themselves. It’s a window on human nature. Your relationship with your hair is intensely human. It’s about vanity and confidence, self-definition and perception, acceptance and rejection. Proof positive of just how much hair is a key to life.

Moving Stories II

On the human stress scale, moving is ranked high up, after dying and divorcing – ironic, because a move often follows on the heels of a death or divorce. Yet we move. Often. Moving is unavoidable and maybe even inevitable. Moving Stories captures the human story – with all its imperfections and triumphs – through the blood, sweat and beers of moving.

Each program in this series profiles a Quebec singer, drawing on archival material, in-depth interviews with the artist, and testimonials from a dozen guests who have been part of the artist’s circle over the course of his or her career. The show wouldn’t be complete, of course, without performances of the artist’s songs and music.

“With startling honesty and immediacy, Gerry Rogers began filming her ordeal with breast cancer the moment her hair started falling out. You are with her at four in the morning when she expresses her deepest fears and her most intimate feelings; she takes you to her doctor’s appointments and family gatherings… You won’t watch this film, you will experience it… and you will never see the world quite the same way again.” – Terre Nash, Academy Award-winning director, If You Love This Planet

Nanook (Ice Bear)

Southern wildlife films present a sanitized message about wild animals and the wildernesses they live in. Baby Beluga … Bambi … creatures to play with, wildlife as entertainment. Inuit see wildlife differently. In Igloolik, like most hunting cultures, baby beluga, bambi and bugs bunny are respectful creatures to hunt, catch and eat. Nanook (Ice Bear) looks at polar bears from an Inuit point of view. No nonsense.

Odyssée du Père Sablon (L')

He spent his life travelling across Quebec and around the world, trying to convince as many people as he could that sports could play an extraordinary role in the development of young people. He instilled a willingness and determination to succeed in hundreds of youths from economically deprived backgrounds.

Oppression II

This examination of mental illness combines personal testimony with scientific inquiry. We meet those afflicted by this oppressive illness, and learn about the scientific knowledge that has been gained through research on the different manifestations of the illness. The series offers a historical perspective on the study of mental illness and highlights some of the prevailing and long-debated opinions on the subject, using an approach that assumes that the problems associated with mental illness are both widespread and permanent.

Orkney Lad (The): The Story of Isabel Gunn

The story of Isabel Gunn – Orkney lass, Hudson’s Bay Company labourer and “debauched” cross-dresser – has been a dusty footnote in Canada’s fur trade history. In 1807, “John Fubbister” forever changed our image of Canada as a place explored by adventurous European men braving an unforgiving wilderness when, according to witnesses, he “lay down on the hearth and proceeded to give birth to a son.” Fubbister was Isabel Gunn, a poor lass with a vagrant heart who risked everything when she swapped her skirts for trousers and sailed west to Hudson Bay.

This program looks at some of the legacies white settlers in North America have inherited from Native peoples. These include birch-bark canoes, snow-shoes, animal traps, forest pathfinding skills and ice-fishing techniques – as well as the rituals, at once religious and medicinal, which were based on the Natives’ interpretation of dreams and their relationship with cosmic forces.

People's Poet: Alden Nowlan

Alden Nowlan quit school in the middle of grade five and eventually became one of Canada’s greatest poets. No Canadian poet has dealt with broader themes: from poverty to faith, from love and marriage to nature, from introspection to poetry itself. The poems are narrated over footage of the inspiring setting in which Nowlan worked as well as stills by Canadian artist R. E. Balch, whose works Nowlan chose to illustrate some of his books.

The name “Tim Horton” dots the Canadian landscape. But few know the tragic and tangled story behind the hockey icon who founded one of Canada’s most successful donut chains. What began as a fairy tale got lost in bad luck and bad mistakes. Today, 27 years after Tim’s sudden death, none of the wealth generated by the chain belongs to his family. In this biography, Tim’s widow, Lori – filmed only weeks before her death – speaks candidly and emotionally about her life with and without Tim.

Profils

Their lives have taken extraordinary paths. They have a decidedly original, often revolutionary, way of seeing, speaking and taking action. They are successful, and their lives are one big adventure. They are 12 visionary individuals, and their stories have been told by three francophone producers from different parts of Canada. From their first moment onscreen it is obvious that these remarkable people are prepared to ruffle the feathers of conventional wisdom, and that they are fearless in their pursuit of what they feel passionate about.

René Lecavalier : annonceur, chanteur, hockeyeur, commentateur...

René Lecavalier. The name alone evokes play-by-play coverage of hockey games on television. But Lecavalier was more than a sports announcer. A highly cultivated man with wide-ranging interests, he started his career at Radio-Canada by working in cultural and comedy programs. Although he was tempted by the artistic life, his career ultimately gravitated toward sports – the result of chance work assignments as well as his own considerable athletic skills.

Reservation

Reservation is a unique cinema-verité series about a contemporary First Nation reserve. Shot over a year in the life of the Shuswap at Alkali Lake, British Columbia, the series unflinchingly looks at the major themes of Aboriginal existence by following the daily life of 15 individuals over the year, providing a window on a reality that non-Native people never get to see. It is disturbing, provocative and surprisingly uplifting, celebrating the triumph of a people over endless government bureaucracy.

Right to Jam? (The)

“Culture jammers” subversively use commercial media power against itself. Armed with printing presses, art supplies and humour, they ambush corporate media. “Liberated” billboards, media hoaxes and re-routed Web sites are all guerrilla tactics in the culture jamming revolution. The Right to Jam? asks… Is culture jamming civil disobedience? senseless vandalism? the only form of self-defence left?

Roussil ou la curieux destin d'un anarchiste impénitent

Robert Roussil was a legendary figure on the Quebec art scene. In 1949, he caused a scandal with his sculpture La Famille. In 1956, after virulently condemning what he saw as the ossified nature of Quebec society, he exiled himself to France. Today, aged 76, he continues to live in Tourettes-sur-Loup, his refuge from the world, more alone and misunderstood than ever. This documentary uncovers the man behind the artist and attempts to shed light on the “mystery” of Robert Roussil.

Grande mouvée (La)

Each year, millions of harp seals mate on the ice floes that drift in the middle of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. And each year, a war begins anew: a war of image and ideology which pits hunters against environmentalists, a war in which the real victims are a quarter of a million young seals. Seals, On the Rocks! examines this annual phenomenon and forces viewers to confront their own social and moral beliefs.

Secret War: The Odyssey of the Suffield Volunteers

During the Second World War, the Canadian government experimented on its own soldiers at a remote base in the Alberta prairies. Had these tests been done on enemy soldiers, they would have been labelled war crimes. Secret War is the story of four Canadian soldiers – four out of more than two thousand – who between 1941 and 1945 volunteered to be human guinea pigs, testing deadly mustard gas at Suffield, Alberta.

Stranger in Our Home (A)

A Stranger in Our Home tells the disturbing tales of two teenage victims of Internet predators. Daniel explored sexuality with another “13-year-old online friend” – actually a 59-year-old pedophile who coerced him into a cross-border meeting. Stephanie waited in a motel parking lot for a real-life encounter with her Internet boyfriend – a 43-year-old married man with three children of his own. The Internet is a window to the world, but through that window strangers slip silently into our homes.

Studio: The Life and Times of Alex Colville

Studio: The Life & Times of Alex Colville was filmed as the artist entered his 80th year. The film explores Colville’s singular development as a painter who set himself apart to become a unique talent and in turn defined Canadian art for a generation. It also looks at his time at war and examines how the conflict assaulted his sensibilities so much that it never truly left him.

Summer of '48 (The)

“The Summer of ’48 is a universal story about two men – a father and his son. My father and me. It is also a tale of two abandonments – his and mine – and our search for reconciliation told through my father’s journey to find the boys he played baseball with in 1948, a journey I document on a digital camera. What we both discover is not what we expect.” – Dugald Maudsley

TAMBOURS D'ABITIBI (LES)

In the Algonquin language, “Abitibi” means “waters of the middle.” It refers to the region in Quebec that lies between two watersheds: James Bay and the St. Lawrence River. The Algonquin, who have lived for thousands of years in this vast expanse, acted as guides for the first white trappers and loggers to venture into the area. In this documentary, filmmaker Paolo Quaregna examines the relationship between the 6,000 Algonquins and the 160,000 whites who coexist in this fascinating region.

Through Thick and Thin

Two filmmakers stand naked in the reflection of their own words, excerpts from their recent journals written on a wall. A lithe young woman hunches over a toilet bowl, a hangman’s noose cinched tightly around her neck – “silent suicide.” In this uniquely stylized documentary, the filmmakers, Leslie Côté, a recovered bulimic, and Felicia Francescut, a recovered anorexic, seek to unravel the naked truth about their own illnesses.

Titans: The Canadian Establishment

In 1998, veteran Canadian writer Peter C. Newman published the third of his best-selling books on the Canadian Establishment, Titans, a colourful and controversial work that chronicled the demise of the Old Establishment and the creation of a new band of men and women who now run Canada’s economy. Based on Newman’s extensive research, this documentary series profiles some of the most influential people in Canada, as individuals and as heads of the country’s most powerful corporations.

To Colonize a People: The File Hills Indian Farm Colony

The File Hills Indian Farm Colony operated on the Peepeekisis Indian Reserve in southern Saskatchewan between 1900 and 1932. The Colony brought together select graduates from Indian Industrial and Residential Schools for the purpose of farming, community development and, ultimately, assimilation. Although cele- brated nationally and politically as a success, the Colony was also an admitted experiment with human lives and social engineering – meant to solve the “Indian Problem.”

In April 1975, a picture of Naomi Bronstein, in shock at the site of a plane crash in Saigon, made headlines. She had arranged to evacuate orphans on the flight – to be adopted in the West. The horror of that moment has reverberated through her life. She has adopted seven orphans and has worked with sick children all over the world. This documentary traces Naomi’s fast-paced life and highlights an emotional reunion – 25 years on – with orphans who miraculously escaped the crash.

Une révolution tranquille - Une histoire populaire du Québec

This documentary offers a clear and fair-minded assessment of Quebec society between 1960 and 1980. In Quebec, as elsewhere, traditional ideologies were breaking down: major social and economic reforms were introduced, war measures were imposed, labour unions and feminists sought greater rights, language tensions arose, nationalism surged, health and educational services were modernized, society became increasingly secularized, and business began to play a more prominent role – leading to the rise of “Quebec Inc.” The 1960s to the 1980s, in short, were a time of social upheaval.

Untangling the Mind - The Legacy of Dr. Heinz Lehmann

When Dr. Heinz Lehmann launched his career in Canada in the 1930s, psychiatric hospitals were, in Lehmann’s own words, “snake pits.” In hospitals around the world, naked patients lay in their own excrement while orderlies wrestled violent inmates into straightjackets. This documentary offers a poignant look at the man who transformed psychiatric hospitals into the therapeutic environments they are today – a feat he accomplished with a single pill, Largactil, the first anti-psychotic drug used in North America.

Vive la chanson libre

Between 1970 and 1980, popular songs in Quebec were intimately tied to politics. From the 1970 October Crisis to the 1980 Referendum defeat, the landscape of Quebec song was coloured by the marriage of reason and passion. In this documentary, singers, songwriters, politicians and other observers look back over this period in Quebec’s history, which was filled with emotion as well as disappointment.

Why is it that, throughout history, men and women have always followed the same pattern, constantly choosing to live together, constantly breaking up? Why, despite their difficulties maintaining a relationship, do some men and women persist in living as a couple? This series looks at what it means to live in a relationship today, as seen through the testimonies of men and women who live together. Each episode introduces us to an ordinary couple and observes how they negotiate the everyday challenges of their partnership.

Vivre sans homme

This documentary introduces us to some 20 women, aged between 18 and 77, who live alone, either by choice or circumstance. Although they have attained a measure of freedom and independence by living alone, their lives are marked by an often-painful solitude. Wary young women, abandoned wives, women who have simply given up on relationships: the program examines the bonds that these women have forged with one another, and looks at the ties they have with those whom they left behind in their quest for freedom.

Voix de la prairie (La)

Western Canada is home to a vibrant, organized – and virtually unknown – community of some 100,000 people who share a common trait: they speak French. This documentary goes in search of these men and women, the remaining survivors of a history that belongs to them alone and which they are desperately trying to preserve. Living on the vast prairies, the members of this community trace their roots to the original voyageurs and coureurs de bois who penetrated deep into the heart of North America.

Walls for Change

Murals, conflict and community. Canadian, Irish and American artists mirror community struggles and aspirations through contemporary political wall murals. The results are dramatic statements from neighbourhoods more commonly known for their daily tragedies than for the spirit and strength that is evidenced in their art.

War Brides (The): From Romance to Reality

The War Brides: From Romance to Reality explores the amazing stories of the women who married Canadian servicemen during the Second World War and came to live in Canada. It is a remarkable tale of hope, courage, perseverance and determination. The women reminisce about the hopelessness and despair wrought by bombing raids, wartime rations, military service and factory work. Together they weave an intensely personal view of war from a female perspective.

Weird Wheels

Hidden away in garages, barns and workshops across North America, creative minds decorate and attach weird stuff to their vehicles. Serious “funsters” think up ways to motorize whatever they happen to be sitting on. We learn what makes these very independent people tick, why they do what they do, and how those around them accept their obsessions. We also visit some of the many events where they show off their “masterpieces.”

Wild for Weather

Wild for Weather explores the world media’s obsession – and the public’s fascination – with weather, especially disasters. The film follows journalist Josh Freed as he travels far and wide in search of an explanation for this peculiar phenomenon. As expected, a curious cast of characters emerges, including storm chasers, meteorologists and sky artists. In the end, one question lingers: How did weather, once the most mundane of topics, become so sexy?

Wild Lives

Based on the current television trend of telling the story of almost everyone who’s anyone, Wild Lives takes an established format and gives it a twist: telling the life stories of a variety of wild creatures. In the human world, a life and death struggle is rare high drama; in the natural world, life and death struggles are a daily occurrence. Each episode features an individual indigenous wild creature: coyote, garter snake, swift fox, white pelican, coot, moose, and others.

You... Me & the Kids - The Teen Years

This award-winning combination of drama and documentary focuses on family issues and is directed towards parents and teens. Each episode pursues a single topic and, within each episode, the drama of Rachel, her high-spirited daughter, Emily, and their newly blended family with Sam and his daughter, Chloe, continues to unfold. The dramatic line contrasts with and sometimes parallels the story told in the documentary segments.
