Leonard, a waiter in a restaurant, mugs people by night. Responsible for landing his brother, Patrick, in jail, Leonard commits his crimes in a desperate attempt to raise bail money before Patrick, a struggling writer with an unpublished novel, is destroyed by the experience of imprisonment. One of Leonard's victims is Leah, a literary agent. Leah, with few friends, no permanence in her life, and a job that she doesn't seem cut out for, is crushed by the mugging. One day, Leonard learns of the effect that his crime has had on Leah. Using her stolen identification, he tracks Leah down and befriends her. But Leonard's real intentions are unclear: does he want to sell his brother's novel, make amends for his crime, or maybe pursue something more personal?
