YEAR OF THE CARNIVORE

Sammy Smalls is a 21-year-old store detective at Big Apple Food Town. Her job is to deliver shoplifters to the boss who beats them up so they never re-offend. Sammy feels guilty about her part in the dodgy scheme but needs the work. Meanwhile, she is head-over-heels for Eugene Zaslavsky, a scruffy street musician. He's perfect for her: funny, irreverent and sensitive. Trouble is he doesn't want to be in a relationship. After a disastrous one-night stand, Eugene suggests they play the field to get more experience. Following his advice, Sammy hatches a plan catapulting her on a quest that takes her through her neighbours’ bedrooms and the public swimming pool. And, finally, to blackmailing shoplifters into giving her sex lessons in the woods behind the supermarket.

Sook-Yin Lee
Director
Vancouver-born, Sook-Yin Lee is a Toronto-based musician, actor, filmmaker and media personality. She fronted the art-rock band Bob's Your Uncle before embarking on a solo career. The former MuchMusic VJ hosts the irreverent CBC radio show Definitely Not The Opera. She also starred in the feature film Shortbus, which in 2006 premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Lee’s award-winning short films: Unlocked, Girl Cleans Sink, and Escapades of the One Particular Mr. Noodle have screened internationally. In 2008, she wrote, directed and acted in The Brazilian, a chapter in the 2008 feature movie Toronto Stories. Year of the Carnivore is Lee’s feature film debut.
