Word Slingers

Joel Wapnick is having breakfast at his Montréal home, dividing his attention between a bowl of cereal and a thick dictionary. He’s memorizing obscure words – as many as 20,000 of them. Wapnick won the Scrabble world crown two years ago with little-known words like scrieve, vatu and pelf. Wapnick and fellow Montrealer David Boys are both at the pinnacle of worldwide Scrabble competition. They competed in the world championships, held in Las Vegas in December 2001.
