Emerson Thorsen, 13, has just had his first wet dream, and completed writing and illustrating his first book. Meanwhile, the home-schooled youth can barely add two plus two. His mother enrols him in the local school. There, he meets Don, the English teacher, who, at 42, has settled into a life of perpetual adolescence, paying regular visits to a park washroom for anonymous sex. Surprisingly, Don sees a bit of himself in Emerson. Emerson, initially scornful of his teacher, quickly develops his first crush – on Don. The precocious boy, raised in a household of casual nudity and sexual openness, throws himself into this awakening of the heart with dangerous abandon. This is going to be a whole new thing. For everyone.

Amnon Buchbinder has been making films since age 12 when he received a Super 8 camera. His short films span dramatic, experimental, documentary, and performing arts genres, and have been screened at festivals around the world. His Genie-winning first feature film, The Fishing Trip (1998), was made in collaboration with his students at York University where he has taught screenwriting since 1995. Buchbinder has been a programmer with the Toronto International Film Festival, director of programming at the Vancouver International Film Festival, and is the author of The Way of the Screenwriter (2005). Whole New Thing is his second feature film.
