Carl Bessai’s first feature film, Johnny, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival of 1999 where it received a special jury citation. It went on to receive a nomination for a Golden Alexander (Thessaloniki, 1999) prize before being released theatrically. His second feature, Lola, premiered at the Toronto festival in 2001 and went on to screenings at the Sundance and Berlin film festivals in 2002. His 2003 feature, Emile, also premiered at the Toronto festival and went on to theatrical releases in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Severed, Bessai’s eco-horror, art-house zombie film enjoyed wide international sales.
