Winston Churchill, upon hearing of Leonard Birchall's heroics in relaying information on Japanese forces heading for Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), dubbed him the “Saviour of Ceylon.” As a result of his heroism, Birchall’s plane was shot down over the Indian Ocean and he was captured by the Japanese. The Saviour of Ceylon brings to life Birchall's harrowing three years in POW camps and the controversy surrounding the war crimes trials in which he participated.
