ROMANCING THE LABRADOR

The Innu of the Ungava Peninsula in the early 1900s were nomads who lived in caribou-skin lodges called shaputuans and speared caribou crossing the Mushuau-shipu (George) River. Despite periodic starvation, they lived in intimate familiarity with the land that shaped their culture. That strangers like Herman J. Koehler from New Jersey and others from southern cities would cherish the wilderness these Innu called home was incomprehensible to them. Romancing the Labrador explores this paradox.
