MABEL BELL'S AERIAL EXPERIMENT

Mabel Bell, wife of Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, was a prominent and wealthy champion of alternative schooling, education for the handicapped, poor and women, racial integration, and women's voting rights. She was also a champion of her husband's experiments with flight, earning a reputation as the "first lady of flight." In 1907, Mabel organized and financed an Aerial Experiment Association, based in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Between 1907 and 1909, the AEA was the main competitor of the Wright Brothers. In 18 months, the AEA built four working airplanes, set numerous records - and wrote one of the most important and interesting chapters in aviation history.
