The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale set in the present. It tells the story of Dr. Parnassus and his extraordinary Imaginarium, a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom. Long ago, Dr. Parnassus made a bet with the devil, Mr. Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr. Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born turned16, he or she would become the property of Mr. Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this coming-of-age milestone and Dr. Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate.

Terry Gilliam first gained recognition in 1969 as the only American member of the popular television show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. In 1975, he co-directed his first feature, Monty Python and the Holy Grail that was followed by his solo directorial debut, Jabberwocky (1977). Subsequent films include Time Bandits (1981), Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983), Brazil (1985), which was nominated for the Oscar for best original screenplay, The Fisher King (1991), Twelve Monkeys (1995), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), The Brothers Grimm (2005) and Tideland (2006). In 1991, Gilliam won the Silver Lion award for best director at the Venice International Film Festival.
