Set in the 1980s in a world that has suddenly discovered cash machines, High Life recounts what happens when ringleader Dick reconnects with Bug, his long-standing partner in crime, who’s fresh out of prison. Their reunion takes an unexpected turn when Bug gets Dick fired from the first straight job he’s ever held and suddenly Dick’s steady stream of cash and narcotics runs dry.
Honour among thieves figures large in this story: Dick can’t ever stay angry at Bug and, besides, he owes him for doing time on his behalf. Still, Dick needs cash fast so he hatches a plan to pay back Bug, clear the slate and make a fresh start. But things go wrong with the arrival of neurotic Donnie and his brilliant ATM scam, and young Billy, the charming front man.

Montreal-born Gary Yates worked for 10 years as a professional magician prior to becoming a filmmaker. An award-winning writer, director and producer, Yates was short-listed for an Academy Award nomination for Best Short Film for his comedic noir Without Rockets. His first feature film Seven Times Lucky premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews, where Variety magazine described it as "An absolute knockout of a feature debut, superbly crafted in every department." The film went on to win the City TV Award at the Vancouver International Film Festival, and Best Screenplay and Best Feature at the Method Fest in Los Angeles. High Life is Yates' third feature film.
