HEIDI RATHJEN: FROM TRAGEDY TO TRIUMPH

In 1989, Heidi Rathjen was a student at the University of Montréal’s École polytechnique when 14 young women were shot to death. Profoundly affected by the massacre, and disgusted at the ease with which individuals can procure assault weapons, she formed a broad-based coalition aimed at improving gun-control laws. Her fight bore fruit when, in 1995, the Canadian government enacted new gun-control legislation.
