Communism in Europe may have been nothing to joke about – or wasn’t it? Hammer and Tickle explores just how humour contributed to the defeat of the infamous regimes. More than a compilation of jokes -- of which there are thousands -- the film presents the people who created the jokes, those who tried to silence them, the ones who risked punishment merely in documenting them and the unfortunates who were imprisoned for telling them.
