HABBAKUK: SHIP OF ICE

During the Second World War in an effort to support Allied Forces in the U-boat plagued North Atlantic, an eccentric British genius, Geoffrey Pyke, made an unusual proposal that captured the imagination of Winston Churchill and Lord Mountbatten. Pyke intended to build an indestructible ship of ice to serve as a floating airfield in the frigid Atlantic waters. With the help of the Canadian government, a prototype, “Habbakuk,” was constructed in Alberta’s Patricia Lake.
