FIRST CONTACT: A RENAISSANCE MAN MEETS “THE ROMANS OF THE NEW WORLD”

First Contact is a highly interactive Web site (http://firstcontact.monroco.com) and CD-ROM that celebrates the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s exploration and settlement of early Canada. The “extreme sport” of exploring four centuries ago is experienced today through interactive movies, maps, timelines, primary documents, learning activities and a Teacher’s Centre. The Story Studio enables Web users to make their own interpretations of, and presentations on, colliding cultures when Champlain, a remarkable “Renaissance man”, encounters the Huron and Iroquois. Champlain’s fascinating journal descriptions of Aboriginal society interact and contrast with the rich lore and oral history of First Nations peoples.
