C.D. HOY: PORTRAITS FROM THE FRONTIER

Photographer Chow Dong Hoy moved from China to rural British Columbia at the turn of the last century. During an era when most photographers depicted Canada's Aboriginal people as "noble savages", Hoy was advancing the art of ethnographic photography by creating haunting portraits of Aboriginal peoples and their interactions with encroaching settlers. This film draws upon an extraordinary archive of photographs and film footage to document the life and art of Chow Dong Hoy.
