CAPTIVE - THE STORY OF ESTHER

Captive tells the story of the filmmaker's ancestor, Esther Wheelwright, who was abducted by the Abenaki people in 1703 as a child and taken from New England to Quebec. Raised a Puritan, Esther converted to Catholicism, refused to return to her family, and became an Ursuline nun. Among her extraordinary achievements, she became Mother Superior of her Order, fought for women's education, buried General Montcalm and helped to ensure the survival of the French Canadian people and the Catholic Church after the British Conquest of 1759.
