ANGAQUIIT: SHAMAN STORIES

The last shamans in the Igloolik region of Canada's Eastern Arctic – the grandparents and great-grandparents, both men and women, of Inuit living today –are known through local oral history and the journals of Knud Rasmussen and the early missionaries. This film examines their lives as healers, spirit mediators, ceremonial leaders and interpreters of the elaborate Inuit spiritual philosophy in the period when Christian missionaries first arrived in the Eastern Arctic and changed the Inuit way of life.
