The year is 1909. In the village of Sainte-Philomène de Fortierville, Marie-Anne Caron, wife to Télésphore Gagnon, gives birth to their second daughter, Aurore. The child grows up in a loving and happy family, but in 1918 her mother dies of tuberculosis. Shortly after, Télésphore Gagnon decides to remarry, having fallen under the spell of his beautiful cousin, Marie-Anne Houde. Marie-Anne is not the devoted stepmother everyone takes her to be, however. Following the death of Aurore, a coroner's inquest reveals that the young girl had died of blood poisoning, brought on by the horrific abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepmother. The sensational trial which followed these revelations had a profound and lasting impact on Quebec society. Aurore depicts an almost-forgotten period and social milieu of Quebec's history, finally giving voice to those who, at the time, knew what was going on but preferred to remain silent.

After studying music as well as management, Luc Dionne began working as a political aide. In 1996, having turned to television, he scripted his first drama series, Omertà, la loi du silence, which became a huge hit and earned him a Gémeaux award. Dionne continued the series with Omertà II, la loi du silence and Omertà III, le dernier des hommes d'honneur. He then went on to co-script Tag, a series about young delinquents, The Last Chapter (Le Dernier Chapitre), a mini-series about criminal biker gangs which was broadcast in English and in French, and its sequel, The Last Chapter – The Revenge (Le Dernier Chapitre – La Vengeance). In 2002, Luc Dionne scripted Bunker-le cirque, a dramatic series which explored a subject he knew intimately: the underbelly of politics. Aurore is the first feature he has directed.

À part des autres is in many ways a culmination of the unique body of work that Marcel Simard has produced over the course of his career. Mixing documentary and fiction, his films have always had a strong focus on social commitment. His work includes Le grand Monde, Les Mots perdus, Love-moi and, more recently, Il était une fois... le Québec rouge and Coeur à bout. À part des autres is his twelfth film. 
One of Quebec's leading actors and recipient of several prestigious acting awards, Luc Picard has appeared in a variety of hit TV series: Chartrand et Simonne I and II, L'Ombre de l'Épervier I and II, Omerta I and II, Les grands procès, Scoop and Blanche. His film work includes the leads in the features 20 h 17, rue Darling, Savage Messiah, Le Collectionneur and 15 Février 1839. L'Audition marks his feature-film directorial debut. 
Sturla Gunnarsson was born in Iceland, raised in Vancouver, and has made films in India, South Africa, Mexico, Central America, the United States and Canada. His feature films, documentaries and television movies have won a multitude of awards, including Emmy, Genie and Gemini Awards, a Prix Italia, the Prix Ville de Cannes and an Oscar nomination. His feature films include the comedy Rare Birds (2001) and the Mumbai (Bombay) epic Such a Long Journey (1998). Documentaries include the cinema vérité classic, Final Offer (1985) and the post-apartheid love story Gerrie and Louise (1997). His two most recent films for television, 100 Days in the Jungle (2002) and Scorn (2000), each won Gemini Awards for "best television movie." 
C.R.A.Z.Y. is Jean-Marc Vallée's fourth feature. Born in Montréal, Jean-Marc Vallée studied film at the Université de Montréal. In 1992, he released his first short, the award-winning Stéréotypes, and followed up with the shorts Les Fleurs magiques (1995) and Les Mots magiques (1998), which also received several prestigious awards. In 1995, he shot his first feature, the thriller Liste Noire, which was a number-one box office hit in Quebec and a multiple Genie Award nominee. He subsequently directed one episode of the U.S. TV series Strangers, as well as the feature Los Locos (1998), a Western. In 1998, he also directed two instalments of the series The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. 
A graduate of the film program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Nisha Ganatra's first feature film, Chutney Popcorn (2000) received much acclaim, garnering audience awards at the Berlin, Paris, and Madrid international film festivals and best feature film awards at the San Francisco and Outfest Los Angeles film festivals. Ganatra then took the helm at MTV, directing episodes of the internationally syndicated Real World: New York and the Road Rules/Real World Challenge. Her next film was the critically acclaimed Canadian television movie, Fast Food High (2002). More recently, Ganatra directed Cosmopolitan, written by Sabrina Dhawan, who also scripted the 2001 feature, Monsoon Wedding. 
After making the jump from philosophy to cinema, Roger Boire spent two years studying film in England. He then started his career at the National Film Board of Canada, where he worked as an editor, all the while producing and directing his own independent short films. He subsequently worked as a line producer at Nanouk Films and began writing feature films. In 1997, he produced and directed his first feature docu-drama, La beauté, fatale et féroce... Comment devenir un trou de cul et enfin plaire aux femmes is his first feature film. 
Paul Fox is an accomplished film and television director with an array of impressive, award-winning short films, music videos and television productions to his credit. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where his short thesis film, Last Round Up, won several awards. After participating in the Director's Lab at the Canadian Film Centre, Paul continued directing short films, including Reunion, which garnered international acclaim, playing festivals around the world. The Dark Hours is Paul Fox's first feature film. His next directing project is the feature Everything's Gone Green, with an original script by Douglas Coupland. 
Richard Bell trained as an actor and playwright at Studio 58 in Vancouver. From 1998 to 2000, he wrote and directed his first short feature, Two Brothers, a movie he shot with a borrowed video camera for a paltry $545. The "little movie that could" garnered substantial media attention and critical acclaim at film festivals. With Eighteen, his first major film, Richard Bell directed two-time Oscar nominee Sir Ian McKellen and Tony Award-winner Alan Cumming -- all before turning 30. As a screenwriter, Richard is mentored by L.A.-based screenwriter Donald Martin. 
Vancouver-based filmmaker Julia Kwan studied film and psychology at Ryerson Polytechnic University in Toronto. She was also a director resident at the Canadian Film Centre, where she made the short Three Sisters on Moon Lake. The film had its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and its U.S. premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Kwan's short films have traveled extensively and have received many awards, including best film awards in Montréal, New Orleans and Houston, and audience awards in Toronto, Arkansas and Sao Paulo. Eve & the Fire Horse is Julia Kwan's first feature. 
A graduate of Concordia University, Louise Archambault worked as a unit director, stills photographer, director and line producer before focusing on her own film projects. To date, she has directed five shorts, including Atomic saké (1999), which won the Jutra prize in 2000 for best Quebec short as well as the award for best film at the Delle Donne International Film Festival in Turin, Italy. Familia is her first feature. 
David Ray combines an original voice with many years slugging it out in the film/TV service sector. His roster of short films and music videos includes Gray Matter, Second Wave, How To Be a Big Time Dancer and the experimental short, Video Graffiti. David has worked in the film industries of New York, Toronto and Vancouver for 10 years, working alongside Robert Altman on Altman's TV pilot Killer App, and Matthew Harrison (Sex in the City) on Harrison's first feature, The Rhythm Thief. Fetching Cody is David Ray's feature directorial debut. 
In 1994-1995, Ricardo Trogi took part in La Course destination monde, a series in which young filmmakers competed against one another by making short documentaries shot around the world. Trogi finished third, winning three prizes. During the next few years, he wrote and directed several shorts, including II tango della neve, Viandes et substituts, Second Chance, as well as the medium-length C'est arrivé près de chez nous. In 2003, he co-scripted and directed his first feature, Québec-Montréal, which won four Jutra Awards, including best screenplay, best director, and best picture. In 2004-2005, he directed the TV series Smash, written by Daniel Lemire. Horloge Biologique is his second feature. 
Mark Lewis has been working as a filmmaker since 1994, and has written or co-written four feature-length screenplays and written and directed eight short films, including his latest, The Junkie, which has been picked up as a short series for the CBC. In addition to writing and directing, Mark is also a successful indie editor. His latest project, A Match Made in Seven (dir. Ilan Saragosti), which he edited and co-wrote, received the audience award at the Temecula Valley International Film & Music Festival in California and was a Bronze Plaque winner at the Columbus International Film Festival (The Chris Awards). Ill Fated is the first feature he has directed. 
Alain Zaloum graduated from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles with a BA in film and television. He has directed several TV series: Her Money, nominated for a Gemini Award, The Painted House and With Friends Like These. Before It's not me... it's him!, he directed the features Promise Her Anything, Suspicious Minds, Canvas, Outpost and Sins of Seduction. 
Clement Virgo's first feature film, Rude, had its world premiere at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, where it screened as an Official Selection. It also opened the Perspectives Canada section at the 1995 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and was selected for the 1996 Sundance Festival. Love Come Down, Clement's second feature, had its international premiere at TIFF in 2000, and its European premiere at the Berlinale in 2001. Love Come Down won top prizes at a number of Black film festivals, including those in New York City, Acapulco, Jamaica and Britain. His short film Save My Lost Nigga' Soul (1993) won prizes for best film at the Toronto, Fespaco (Burkina Faso) and Chicago film festivals. 
After graduating from King's College, in Nova Scotia, Michael Mabbott worked as a freelance journalist and humour columnist. Ultimately disenchanted with journalism, he began writing Cabbage Soup, a fictional memoir later adapted for the screen. Mabbott's other screen credits include First Date, the tale of a hilariously bad blind date chronicled through security cameras, and Thumb, a feature-length black comedy about a failed comic/serial killer. Mabbott's current projects include Ouch, a romantic comedy about an accident-prone man, Mr. Delicious, an epic comedy described as "King Lear meets Martha Stewart," and a mock-umentary sitcom called Happy Lucky. The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico marks his feature-film directorial debut. 
A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Anais Granofsky starred in the original CBC Degrassi series, playing the part of Lucy Fernandez, and has appeared in more than 40 film and television productions over the past 15 years. She has directed three feature films: Have Mercy (1999), On Their Knees (2001) and The Limb Salesman, all of which were screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Limb Salesman is her third film with screenwriter Ingrid Veninger. 
Sean Garrity began his career as a filmmaker and musician in Winnipeg in 1997, creating award-winning music videos, documentaries and short films. His shorts include Middle, How Much for a Half Kilo? (2000), which won the best film award at the Calgary Independent Film Festival, and Buenos Aires Souvenir, which was in official competition at the 2002 Clermond-Ferrand Short Film Festival. Sean's first feature film, Inertia, received the best Canadian first feature award at the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival, as well as the best director award at the 2001 FilmCan Festival. Lucid is his second feature. 
Blaine Thurier's first film, Low Self-Esteem Girl (2000), was based on his serialized comic strip and won Best Narrative Feature at the ultra-hip South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Male Fantasy is his second film. He plays keyboards in the wildly popular band, The New Pornographers, for whom he has directed two acclaimed music videos. He lives in Vancouver with his wife and two cats, and speaks fluent Japanese. 
After working in various capacities on a number of short films between 1977 and 1983, François Bouvier served as producer, co-producer or writer on the feature films Jacques et Novembre (1984), Marie s'en va-t-en ville (1987) and Les Matins infidèles (1989). In 1994, he directed his first dramatic feature, Les Pots cassés. In 1997, he made the television movie Quai No 1, followed by the feature Histoires d'hiver, in 1998. François Bouvier has also directed various series for television, including Tribu.com, which was a huge hit in Quebec during its four-year run. 
An anthropologist by training, Bernard Émond began his film career by making documentaries. His work includes Ceux qui ont le pas léger meurent sans laisser de trace, winner of the best medium-length feature prize at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois in 1992, L'Instant et la patience (1994), La Terre des autres (1995), L'Épreuve du feu (1997), and Le Temps et le lieu (2000). His first two features, La Femme qui boit (2001) and 20 h 17, rue Darling (2003), were screened during the International Critics' Week at Cannes and received several awards. The Novena is Bernard Émond's third feature film. 
After making three short films which were well-received at major festivals, Laurence Ferreira Barbosa directed her first feature in 1993, Les gens normaux n'ont rien d'exceptionnel, which won a Bronze Leopard at the Locarno film festival. She then went on to direct Paix et Amour for television in 1994. In 1997, her feature J'ai horreur de l'amour won the Prix de la jeunesse at Cannes. In 1998, she co-scripted Cédric Kahn's L'ennui, then directed La vie moderne (2000), starring Isabelle Huppert, Lolita Chammah, Frédéric Pierrot and Robert Kramer. 
Hailed as one of the most talented of Quebec's new generation of filmmakers, Érik Canuel started his career in advertising and then went on to shoot music videos for major artists. His television credits include several successful series in both French and English, such as Big Wolf on Campus and Fortier. His film work includes the documentary short Hemingway: A Portrait (1999), which won the Genie Award for best documentary short and the Maximum Image Award at the Miami Aventura Imax Days. The Outlander is Érik Canuel's fourth feature, after La loi du cochon (2001), a thriller, Nez Rouge (2003), the hugely successful romantic comedy, and Le dernier tunnel (2004), a crime drama. 
Vic Sarin is one of Canada's most versatile directors and cinematographers. His credits include award-winning feature films, documentaries and television movies that have earned him a reputation around the world. As a director, his work for television includes Cold Comfort, nominated for six Genie awards; Millennium: Tribal Wisdom and the Modern World, an acclaimed Emmy and Genie-award winning documentary series; and the telefilms Sea People, The Legend of Gatorface and Trial at Fortitude Bay. As a director of photography, he has worked on such feature films as Margaret's Museum, Whale Music, Bye Bye Blues, Dancing in the Dark and On My Own. 
Award-winning director Jim Donovan has directed more than 25 music videos, numerous national and international commercials, and several short films, including Papillon, New Gold Dream and 2MAYHEM3, which was screened in competition at Montréal's Festival of New Cinema in 1996. Television credits include The Mystery Files of Shelby Woo, Misguided Angels, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Galidor – Defenders of the Outer Dimension, and Seriously Weird. Most recently, he directed the hit MTV series Undressed, under the mentorship of Oscar-winning Executive Producer Roland Joffe. Jim's distinctive visual style led to his feature-film debut, Pure, an urban love story set in Montréal's after-hours club scene. 
Robert Morin's films have been enriching Quebec cinema for more than 30 years. In 1987, after having made numerous short and medium-length films, he directed his first feature, Tristesse modèle réduit. He followed this with Réception (1989), Requiem pour un beau sans cœur (1992), Windigo (1994), Yes Sir! Madame (1994), Quiconque meurt, meurt à douleur (1997) and Le Nèg' (2002), which garnered him numerous national and international awards and nominations. 
Ruba Nadda is a writer, director and producer living in Toronto. She has written, produced and directed 14 short films and three features: Sabah (2005), Aadan (2004), Unsettled (2001), I Always Come to You (2000), Blue Turning Grey Over You (1999), Black September (1999), I Would Suffer Cold Hands for You (1999), Laila (1999), Slut (1999), Damascus Nights (1998), The Wind Blows Towards Me Particularly (1998), So Far Gone (1998), Do Nothing (1997), Wet Heat Drifts Through the Afternoon (1997), Interstate Love Story (1997) and Lost Woman Story (1997). Her shorts have been shown in over 450 film festivals, and she has had over 20 retrospectives of her work in numerous cities around the world. 
Writer-director Robin Aubert's credits include a number of short- and medium-length films: La Peintresse des Appalaches (1996), Maudit Criss (1999), Suzie (1999), Les Frères Morel (2000), Lila (nominated for a Prix Jutras in 2001; winner of the award for best short from the Association québécoise des critiques de cinéma) and Cadillac Clown (2002). He has also shot music videos for such artists as Plume Latraverse, Marie-Jo Thério and Okoumé. Aubert won the Musique Plus award for best French-language video for Okoumé's De la terre à la lune. Saints-Martyrs-des-Damnés is Robin Aubert's first feature film. 
During the last 20 years, Monique LeBlanc has worked on a number of short, medium- and feature-length documentaries as a writer, director and producer. Among her films is the 1995 feature documentary The Acadian Connection, which she directed for the National Film Board of Canada. She also directed The Battle of the Schelt and co-directed The Asbestos Strike for the TV series Turning Points of History. For television she also produced Artiste dans l'âme, a documentary series about Canadian artists. Searching for Mary is her second feature-lenght documentary. 
Upon graduating from Montréal's National Theatre School in 1978, Yves Desgagnés quickly emerged as one of Quebec's leading theatre artists. Since 1981, he has directed more than 50 plays and shows, many of which have proved to be both popular and critical successes. As an actor, Desgagnés has appeared in numerous television series, such as Grand-papa, S.O.S. J'écoute, L’héritage, Urgence, Les Machos, Un gars, une fille and Le bleu du ciel. His film work includes appearances in Pourquoi l'étrange monsieur Zolock s'intéressait-il tant à la bande dessinée (Yves Simoneau, 1983), L'Homme renversé (Yves Dion, 1986), Coeur de nylon (Michel Poulette, 1990) and La fenêtre (Monique Champagne, 1992). In 2003, he played the role of Olivier in Denys Arcand's The Barbarian Invasions. Shooting Star marks Yves Desgagnés' feature-film directorial debut. 
David Weaver is a graduate of the University of Toronto as well as Columbia University's prestigious graduate film program. He has written and directed numerous short films, including No Mystery, A Boy's Own Story, In Memory and Moon Palace, which has won nine international awards and been invited to more than 35 film festivals. David made his debut as a feature filmmaker with Century Hotel, which premiered at the 2001 Toronto International Film Festival. He frequently reviews books on cinema for The Globe and Mail and has several projects in development, including a feature-length version of Moon Palace. 
Aubrey Nealon began his career with the short film House Arrest (1998). This was soon followed by the award-winning short Abe's Manhood (2000), which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won Nealon a 2000 Shavick Award, recognizing the best emerging directors in Western Canada. His third short film, In Memoriam (2001), proved another hit with audiences at the Montréal World Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, and in 2004 it earned Nealon the first annual Don Haig Award for most promising young Canadian director. Nealon's script for A Simple Curve, his debut feature, won the first annual Jim Burt Award from the Writer's Guild of Canada. 
David Christensen is a producer, director and writer. His recent documentary productions include The Breath of God, about Bible translation, Writing Icons, about modern-day icon painters, The Heart Becomes Quiet, a 90-minute documentary about the Bhopal gas disaster, and War Hospital, a joint NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corp.)/National Film Board of Canada production about an African field hospital. David's short dramatic film Fit premiered at the 1999 Toronto International Film Festival, and in 2001 he produced Solitude (dir. Robin Schlaht), a feature film starring Lothaire Bluteau (Black Robe, Jesus of Montreal). Six Figures is David's feature directorial debut. 
Mark Adam has worked as a director, producer, editor and DOP since 1997. Trained as a classical dancer, he began his filmmaking career with works on the National Ballet of Canada and the Toronto Dance Theatre for the Bravo! channel. His short films, Witnessed (1997), Sarah (1999) and Zummel (1999) were screened at several prestigious film festivals, winning a number of awards. In 2002, Adam was nominated for a Genie Award for best direction (performing arts) for The Dancer's Story. Steel Toes is his first feature. 
A political science graduate from the Université de Montréal, Paul Arcand is a well-known Quebec communicator who likes to shake up the status quo. In 1985, after establishing his notoriety as a radio host, Arcand began his five years as news director of Radiomutuel, a Montreal radio network. Hundreds of thousands of listeners accompanied him each morning on the CKAC show, Bonjour Montréal. In television, Arcand is the host of the award-winning public affairs show Arcand where he interviews local and international newsmakers. Voleurs d’enfance is his first feature film. 
André Forcier is one of Quebec's leading filmmakers. Recipient of the Prix Albert Tessier in 2003 and the Prix André-Guérin in 1990, Forcier's features include La Comtesse de Bâton Rouge (1997), Le Vent du Wyoming (1994), Une Histoire inventée (1990) and L'Eau chaude l'eau frette (1976). The United States of Albert is his 10th feature. 
Acclaimed filmmaker Deepa Mehta has directed seven features, including Sam & Me, her first, which won the 1991 Cannes Film Festival Camera d'Or Critics Honorable Mention; Camilla (1993); and The Republic of Love (2003). In 1996, Deepa directed Fire, the first film in her multi-award-winning "elements" trilogy. This was followed by Earth in 1999. Water, the third film, began shooting in India in 2000, but Hindu fundamentalists burned the sets and the production was eventually shut down following death threats. In need of a comic interlude, in 2002 Deepa shot Bollywood/Hollywood, which became a box office success upon release. Water finally completed shooting in Sri Lanka in June 2004. 
Atom Egoyan has directed several award-winning films, including Calendar, Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter and Ararat. His films have garnered numerous international prizes, including the Grand Prix and International Critics Awards from the Cannes Film Festival as well as two Academy Award nominations, and his work has been presented in major retrospectives around the world. In 2003, Egoyan served as president of the jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. In addition, Egoyan's art installations have been exhibited at museums and galleries in Canada and abroad, including the Venice Biennale. He is also an acclaimed opera director, and his production of Wagner's Die Walküre, first performed by the Canadian Opera Company in April, 2004, will be remounted in autumn, 2006. 
Originally a writer and actor, Raphael Assaf spent most of his twenties appearing in a variety of plays on the London stage, including Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing and the award-winning Miracle on 34th Street, in which he played the lead. Moving to filmmaking, Raphael completed several short films before directing his first feature, the award-winning I Am My Father (2001). The Zero Sum Equation is his second dramatic feature film.
